MEET THE PROFESSOR

Originally from Birmingham, Ala., Jennifer J. Hoggle has been the Director of Equine Science at Judson College since 1996. A Judson girl herself, her students are allowed to simply call her "Jennifer."

Having had an attraction to horses from the age of five, Mrs. Hoggle had always wanted one of her own and finally received her first horse from her father at the age of 14. She immediately entered the showmanship class green, and, with a friend giving her directions from outside the ring, she walked away with the first place ribbon and trophy. After that, horses and competition were in her blood.

Mrs. Hoggle's goal for Judson as a participant of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) is to progress by consistency, horsemanship and communication. Since becoming director of Equine Sciences, she has successfully doubled the size of the program and expanded opportunities for her students through contacts, curriculum and competition within the horse community. In 2010, she successfully helped the college obtain a major in Equine Studies and saw the completion of the colleges' new equine facility. Mrs. Hoggle is active within the community of Marion, including the Marion Rodeo, the Marion Perry County Riding Club and Miss Rodeo Alabama. The crown worn by Miss Rodeo Alabama was designed and patented by Hoggle's Tack and donated to the Miss Rodeo Alabama pageant in 1998. The crown has won photogenics at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant two times since. Mrs. Hoggle was also the first person from Perry County or Judson College to be an elected member of the Alabama Horse Council.

Throughout her career with horses, Mrs. Hoggle has come to understand perseverance as a way of life. She is motivated by a constant drive for improvement in all of her equine undertakings. As the Director of Equine Science at Judson, she has been successful in selecting good, sound horses for the stables, creating a personal relationship with her students, keeping creativity in classes, expanding extracurricular opportunities and staying progressive in the barns.

Besides horses, Mrs. Hoggle also enjoys shopping, spending time outdoors and chocolate. She is married to Robert Hoggle of Marion, has one step-daughter Katie, and far too many pets to count.

"As an avid participant in rodeo and rodeo pageants, I have learned the value of communication as a way of teaching students the art of horsemanship and equine science. My experiences through instruction by my own teachers in the past, various clinics and employment at the local veterinary facility have all given me a well-rounded knowledge of horses."
