Majors Available To Distance Learning Students

Business Administration and Accounting

The major in Business Administration is designed to provide distance learning students with a body of knowledge in Business that will prepare them to excel in graduate study and entry level professional positions in various fields of commerce.

Criminal Justice

The major in criminal justice instills distance learning students with an appreciation of the theoretical concepts which help define the relationship between morality, law, and justice in society.

Education

Distance learning students can major in several areas of education including Elementary Education, Music Education, Secondary Language Arts Education, and Secondary Social Science Education. Satisfactory completion of the prescribed curriculum and requirements will lead to Alabama certification which is recognized in other states. Although course requirements can be completed through distance means, there are field experience requirements as well as internship requirements for which a student must be involved in a local school during school hours. There are no on-campus requirements; however, students must earn a passing score on the Alabama Teacher Testing Program exam, which is administered at several sites throughout the state. The student must be able to accommodate these requirements in his or her schedule.

English

English is at the heart of liberal education. The prescribed English major curriculum works to develop in distance learning students their ability to think critically and analytically and to express their thoughts using standard American English. Reading, writing and thinking are the major components of the English major.

History

Distance learning students who major in history will obtain detailed information in both U.S. and non-U.S. history. Through prescribed courses history students will be trained in the areas of critical thinking and effective communicating. In the course of contact with their professors and through learning facts regarding the historical development of world and of the United States, students will gain the foundation to succeed in graduate school as well as entry level professional positions.

Music

The major in music for distance learning students provides opportunities to develop skills and knowledge of music through courses in musicianship and the history of music. The emphasis is on the literature of music designed to develop basic musicianship and the ability to perform the literature well. There are elements of the music major such as applied music and ensemble performances that obviously cannot be completed through distance learning. Transfer credit may apply to these requirements as well as a thoroughly documented portfolio of college-level musical experiences. See Music Department Handbook

Psychology

Distance learning students who major in Psychology will be prepared to succeed in the career marketplace and graduate school. This is accomplished through a structured academic program which will provide graduates with the necessary verbal, written, conceptual skills, social skills and personal skills.

Religious Studies

Distance learning students who major in religious studies are prepared for lifelong learning and service to their communities and to God. Students can pursue the B.A. in religious studies or the Bachelor of Ministry degree. The B.Min. consists of a major in Religious Studies, a minor in Ministry Skills, and a second minor in an area which will complement the chosen ministry such as music, psychology, or business administration.

Distance learning students may acquire credit through Seminary Extension. This is a ministry education system of the six theological seminaries of the Southern Baptist Convention. Courses approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) and Judson College will transfer to Judson and may be applied for credit toward basic requirements, the major, the minor, and electives.
