Pre-Physical Therapy

The courses required for admission into the physical therapy program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are as follows:

  • ENG 101 – English Composition I (3 hours)
    ENG 102 – English Composition II (3 hours)
  • PSY 201 – General Psychology (3 hours)
    3 Additional Hours of Psychology
  • MAT 121 – Precalculus Trigonometry or higher (3 hours)
  • BUS 231 – Introductory Statistics (3 hours)
  • PHY 201 – General Physics I with Lab (4 hours)
    PHY 202 – General Physics II with Lab (4 hours)
  • CHE 101 – General Chemistry I with Lab (4 hours)
    CHE 102 – General Chemistry II with Lab (4 hours)
  • BIO 121-321 – Medical Terminology (1-3 hours)
  • Biology Courses including Physiology* (16 hours)

    Suggested Courses:
    BIO 104 – Principles of Biology with Lab (4 hours)
    BIO 108 – Introduction to Molecular Biology (2 hours)
    BIO 205 – Human Anatomy (4 hours)
    BIO 206 – Human Physiology (4 hours)
    BIO 402 – Mammalian Physiology (4 hours)

*It is strongly recommended that applicants take the following courses: practical reasoning or logic course, biomechanics or kinesiology and upper level biology (physiology).

The applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university within the United States in a field other than physical therapy. Acceptance will be based on the student’s academic ability and aptitude for a career as a physical therapist. The candidate is expected to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Complete the PTCAS application by December 1, 2014.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 (A = 4.0) overall, prerequisite and last 60 semester hours grade point average.
  • 75% of prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the fall semester of the year of application.
    For example, applicants submitting their application on December 1, 2014 must have 75% of prerequisite courses completed by the end of the fall semester 2014.
    The applicant must have a grade of C or better in all prerequisite courses.
  • Complete at least 40 hours of documented observation of physical therapy in various settings (e.g., hospital, outpatient clinic, pediatric clinic).  Documentation must be submitted to PTCAS by the December 1st deadline.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation to PTCAS.  NOTE:  PTCAS only accepts 4 total letters of recommendation.  UAB will only accept letters of recommendation from PTCAS.  A letter from a Physical Therapist Assistant will not be accepted in lieu of a letter from a Physical Therapist.
    Letter 1: Written by a physical therapist who has interacted with the applicant for at least 20 hours in a clinical setting.
    Letter 2: Written by a physical therapist who has interacted with the applicant for at least 20 hours in a clinical setting.
    Letter 3:  Written by a professor with whom the applicant had significant interaction in an academic setting.
  • Complete the GRE and have scores sent to PTCAS.  The GRE code is 7801.

  • BIO 104 – Principles of Biology with Lab (4 hours)
  • BIO 205 – Human Anatomy (4 hours)
  • BIO 206 – Human Physiology (4 hours)
  • Upper-level Biology in Zoology area with Lab* (4 hours)
  • CHE 101 – General Chemistry I with Lab (4 hours)
    CHE 201 – General Chemistry II with Lab (5 hours)
  • PHY 201 – General Physics I with Lab (4 hours)
    PHY 202 – General Physics II with Lab (4 hours)
  • MAT 121 – Precalculus Trigonometry or higher (3 hours)
  • PSY 201 – General Psychology (3 hours)
    Developmental Psychology (3 hours)
    Upper level Psychology, Sociology, or Ethics (3 hours)
  • BUS 231 – Introductory Statistics (3 hours)
  • ENG 101 – English Composition I (3 hours)
    ENG 102 – English Composition II (3 hours)
    ENG 104 – Speech (3 hours)

*Courses in any aspect of microscopic, vertebrate or human biology are recommended. Botany courses are not accepted as prerequisites.

In addition to satisfying the general admission requirements of the School of Graduate Studies at Alabama State University, the following special requirements must be satisfied by students seeking admission to the Physical Therapy Program:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completed application package for the Physical Therapy Program, submitted through PTCAS.
  • Recommended GRE scores:  Verbal – 145     Quantatative – 14
  • A minimum of 80 hours of volunteer or paid service in physical therapy under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist at a hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, outpatient clinic or community center. Two different settings are recommended.
  • Three recommendations are required: one from a physical therapist documenting the applicant’s exposure to a physical therapy clinical setting and one from an instructor, academic advisor or recent employer who can evaluate the applicant’s academic abilities and character.
  • A written personal statement demonstrating the student’s ability to communicate clearly his/her interest in pursuing the clinical doctorate in physical therapy.
