Interlibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary loan is the process the library goes through to borrow materials from another library. The primary purpose of interlibrary loan at Judson is to supplement the resources available for the academic pursuits of our students, faculty, and staff. When Bowling Library does not have the book or article you need, you can use interlibrary loan to obtain the item.

Who may use ILL?

All students, faculty, and staff of Judson College are eligible for interlibrary loan services. Individuals with outstanding fines, overdue books, or other circumstances may be blocked from using the services until the library account is returned to good standing.

How many items can I request?

Students, faculty, and staff may request five (5) items per week. Please make arrangements with a librarian or clerk if you need additional materials.

Books meant for pleasure reading are limited to 10 per semester.

Items Available for Request

Patrons may request the following types of items: books and articles from periodicals.  Theses, dissertations, rare or fragile items, microfiche, microfilm, and reference books are generally not
available.

Charges for ILL

Most often, there is no cost for interlibrary loan materials. However, the following charges may apply, in the given situations:

  • Any charges to the Bowling Library will be billed to the borrower. If there is a charge by the lending library, the patron will be notified beforehand to determine if the fee will be paid or the request should be canceled.
  • $0.50 per day for overdues.
  • $2.50 for every book that is not picked up before its due date, or the end of the semester.
  • $1.00 + $0.10 per page for every article that is not picked up by the end of the semester.
  • After an item has been renewed once, it will not be reordered during the given semester.
  • A borrower is responsible for reimbursing the lending library for material which is lost, stolen or damaged. The charge is designated by the lending library.

Interlibrary Loan of Current Textbooks

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the required textbooks for each class. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase their textbooks. Academic libraries do not make a practice of purchasing textbooks; consequently few textbooks are available for borrowing. If a student chooses to obtain her textbooks through interlibrary loan, the following conditions will apply:

  • Students are responsible for searching WorldCat and submitting the title to the librarian over ILL.
  • Requests must be made in a timely manner, as interlibrary loans may take 2-4 weeks to arrive. The library bears no responsibility for missed assignments.
  • A $10.00 fee per book will charged.
  • Renewals are set by the lending library.
  • Overdue fines apply to textbooks.
  • After an item has been renewed once, it will not be reordered during the given semester.
