Judson College :: Academics/Digital Judson

Hey everyone! My name is Amber. This year I'll be bringing you to posts about academics here at Judson and a brand new section - Digital Judson!

I'm an animal loving, biology major from Tampa, Florida, who often runs around with her camera trying to be artistic. If you see someone crawling around in the bushes taking photos of random bugs and flowers, that's probably me.

Sometimes it's rough to explain only with words why I love it here. It's just easier to show it! So stick around and check out what I'm up to here at Ol' JC. I promise to post lots of pretty pictures!

Back from Thanksgiving break. I can’t say I’m excited about finals week, but I’m glad to see my friends again.

Cat, Lin, and I drove back yesterday. This leg of the trip was just as silly as the first, maybe even sillier. After a couple hours in the car the air must get thin, because the strangest things seem hilarious. Maybe I’ll have to write a post about all the silly things said later this week.

Here at Judson we’re all wrapping up our classes, putting the finishing touches on papers and starting to buckle down on preparation for finals.

We’re also getting into the Christmas spirit. I myself was in the Christmas mood three weeks ago, but now I can run around singing Christmas carols and not receive as many strange looks as usual. I’m definitely breaking out the red and green themed clothing and the Christmas socks this week.

This weekend is Christmas Tea and Vespers, which I’m looking forward too. The parlors are beautiful decorated in Holiday lights. You can bet that I’ll be there with my camera!

Also, SEC championship - Gator fan in Alabama territory here. I’ll be cheering my team on come Saturday, just you wait!

Just like I predicted all the pretty leaves are gone from my tree. I’ll just have to find something new to take photos of, or I could spend all that extra time finishing my papers.

I’m putting the finishing touches on my The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) New York trip application. In the spring a group of Judson students will be attending sessions there and I’m thrilled about the possibility of going.

Also, I need to work on organizing the art club sale we’ll be having this Thursday during lunch. Students will be selling their own work and maybe even some cookies. Be there!

Thanksgiving break at long last! I’ve missed my mom and my brother and my kitties and my puppy and, and, and…

Give me a moment while I catch my breath.

There. I just have to say that the three or so months I go without seeing home seems like a very long stretch sometimes - usually when my professors assign a lot of homework.

    Papers, they’ll kill ya.

Anyways, back to this break. Cat, Lin and I drove back down to Florida together. Long car rides can be fun, you just have to pack three crazy young women like sardines into a little car then let the hilarity ensue. It’s great to spend some time with close friends. The weeks before this break we’ve all been hiding in our rooms studying and writing papers, so, in a way I hadn’t talked to either of them in ages. All the warm fuzzy feelings wear off after 7 hours or so though. Around then you just want to roll up in your driveway, toss your bags through the door, and snuggle with a kitty or two.

And that’s just what I did.

I can’t say they were all that thrilled with my enthusiasm, as seen in the middle photo. Duchess really couldn’t care less that I wanted to take some nice photos. All she wanted was for me to get my camera out of her face. Silly human, why does she block kitty’s view of the birdfeeder?

I’ve gotten to spend some quality time with my family. My crowning achievement is dragging my brother and his best buddies to see New Moon Saturday morning. I can’t say I enjoyed the movie much. There were plenty of awkward movie silences and I had to struggle and prevent myself from letting out laughs at inappropriate moments as my theatre-mates swooned. Oh well, at least I only paid the matinee price.

Today was To Write Love on Her Arms Day which, straight from the Facebook page is, "a day where anyone can write the word "love" on their arms, to support those who are fighting against depression and those who are trying to recovering." In support of what TWLOHA stands for, several of us Judson ladies got together and joined in by writing love on our own arms. We got creative and wrote it in different languages and then went out for some photo fun with the lovely autumn colors. It was all very artsy and deep I assure you.

I'm notorious for taking tons of photos and I'm never able to narrow my selections down to just a few favorite images. So I present for your viewing enjoyment a headache-inducing-as-Amber-tries-to-figure-it-out-and decides-she-actually-hates-html slideshow! YAY!

Would you get a look at those beautiful colors! Every fall, the maple besides WMU (my dorm building) turns fiery orange the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break. Then after I travel south to the land of green palm trees and back all the leaves disappear, making me very sad :(

Come back leaves! I think I love you!

It’s my absolute favorite tree to snap photos of and thankfully I have friends that put up with me madly doing so. I’m so in love with God’s creation.

Do any of you have a favorite place in nature?  Do have any favorite flora or fauna that just scream the mastery of God’s handiwork to you? Do share!

"Today is more than me, the disarray of things that I can hold or see. For today you shine your light. What you say that's more than words is spoken in your eyes. Colors in array will show themselves before we fly away - colors in array. For love and for day, for love, for truth, for life and all eternity, for this son...g you shine your light. For this song that's more than words will reach into your eyes." – Future of Forestry, Colors in Array

  • Tonight was my little sister class’ Pageant and I must say I was impressed! Pageant is a musical put on annually by the sophomore class. It serves as a gift to their big sister class and provides them with many, many chances to bond and make new friends.

This year Pageant was one of my favorite musicals, “Into the Woods.”  The sophomores did a phenomenal job acting and adding their own personalities into the play. I was even more amazed that they performed the whole musical a cappella. I’m so proud of my little sisters!

Last year my class put on our pageant, “Honk.” We spent a lot of late nights reading lines, moving sets, and working on music, but in the end it was all worth it. We worked together as a class to perform something we loved. When pageant was over, I missed seeing all of my classmates nearly every night. During our practices I had stepped out of my comfort zone, made friends with and worked with classmates that I had never really talked to before. I suppose what I mean is that I kind of miss pageant. I don’t think I could survive it again, but I’m still a little jealous of my little sister class and all the memories they’ve made in the past month or so.

Pageant teaches us all about unity - how to work together despite our differences and learn to love each other for them. Plus, on top of all that, we get some pretty sweet memories. I’m pretty sure I had at least one good laugh every night; not just the, “Haha, oh, how funny,” laughs, but gut wrenching hardy guffaws. Man, I love laughing. So, in closing, here are some words from tonight’s pageant that I find very fitting:

    “Mother cannot guide you.
    Now you're on your own.
    Only me beside you.
    Still, you're not alone.
    No one is alone. Truly.
    No one is alone.”
