Saying Goodbye

It is a bitter sweet moment when a horse has to leave Judson, especially a horse that has been in our program for awhile. We love our horses and they all have a special place in our barn and our hearts. Unfortunately, for some of them, there comes a time when they no longer fit the needs of our program....

Another semester is coming to a close and that means that it is time for riding finals. Like every semester, each student enrolled in a riding class has to perform a mounted routine in costume that corresponds to a song that they have choreographed the routine to. I always find this one of the best parts of the semester....

Thursday was our last day in the city and St. Patricks Day. This was my favorite day because of my deep love for green. I, for one, went all out in my celebration of the amazingly colored holiday and dressed in green, painted my nails green, and even dyed a portion of my hair green....

Wednesday we started at the Field Museum of Natural History and I just LOVE that type of museum! There is just so much to learn and it seems like never enough time to learn it, especially for us that morning. We only had two and a half hours at the museum and the recommended time is a whole day, so to say the least, we did some speed-learning....

I have always loved big cities, the feeling of becoming invisible in the crowd, following the flow of people. I don't think I would ever like to live in a big city, at least not for any great length of time, but I do enjoy visiting. It had been awhile since I got my last “big city” fix but that was taken care of last week....

Ahh, the regular show season for the Judson Equestrians is over. After a good season of hard work it is time for a break, but not quite. We had one of our riders qualify and place in the Regional show which means she will get to move on toSemis. So the work isn't over yet, because we have to get her ready to win....

We had our IHSA show on Judson's campus

this past weekend and everything went really well. The horses all did great and I think the riders had a good time. For the Judson Team, it was nice to have a show at home where we knew the horses and didn't have to travel. I must also add how nice it was to have our new barn located right beside our arena....

So, I mentioned a couple of blogs ago that Judson College's Western Equestrian Team was going to get to go to Auburn to train with Auburn University's Equestrian Team and coaches... We FINALLY got to go.

Alright, so the trip was only delayed one week. We were supposed to go last Tuesday, February 1st, but due to frigid temperatures and torrential down pours we came to the conclusion that it would be best to postpone until the weather decided to be on our side....

I don't remember if I have ever written much about being a member of the Art Club here at Judson College, but it is one of my many extracurricular activities. This is my second year as an Art Club member and I was actually elected to serve as the treasurer for this year.

I have always had a love for art, or I guess more accurately, being creative, so I was really excited when theArt Club became more active on campus last year....

The weather had other plans though and because of possible snow and the likelyhood of ice, classes were canceled for today, so we got an extra day to make sure we were really read for the semester and to catch up with friends before everyone got extra busy with schoolwork....

I think this has been the most interesting weekend of the year!

I have noticed throughout my life that things that are not at all related seem to go well together or, if nothing else, are good for each other.

The activities of my life seem to be no different. I am kind of a random person. I like and enjoy lots of different things. My academic career illustrates this to a degree, I mean I am majoring in business but have a minor in equine science and web design....

What a great time last weekend was! I was really excited to get to meet some girls who were interested in Judson's Equine program and to get to share with them what our program is all about.

Last Saturday (September 25, 2010) was Judson's first ever Equine Preview Day. It was a day designed to provide a more in-depth look at the equine program then Judson's regular preview days because it was meant specifically for prospective students interested in the equine program at Judson....

Judson currently offers a minor in equine science and interdisciplinary majors in Equine and Business and Equine and Psychology ( equine-facilitated mental health).

Construction on Judson's new barn has finally begun! The construction teams came in at the beginning of last week.

The new barn will be located next to the riding arena. The roof structure for the new barn is what used to be the old riding arena. When the new arena was built a few years ago, the old arena was disassembled, moved, and attached to the arena to serve as the basic frame work for the new barn....

It is so much fun to stay with these people, who have opened up their homes to us to make our trip possible. It is really neat too, because so often the people that we stay with are just so happy to have us stay with them. They treat you like royalty, preparing food and doing everything they can to make your stay more comfortable and they do it simply because they are THAT glad that we are staying with them....

Friday, was probably one of the most rememberable days. We sang at Hammond High School. We spent the morning performing for their choir classes and hearing them perform for us. Then during lunch there was a session where students who were interested in learning more about Judson could come meet with some of the choir members and talk to a Judson Recruiter....

Sunday, we served as worship leaders at Trinity Presbyterian Church, and Handbells also played. When the service was over and we were getting ready for the rest of the day, Dr. Brown, our pianist, decided that he wanted to make a skit featuring some of his piano students and other choir members as his personal assistants....

I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the things that are involved with participating in horse shows. Some of these may pertain to one type of showing or another, but they are all things that members of the Judson College Equestrian Team have experienced.

For those of you who have shown before you will probably be able to relate to some of these and laugh at us for others....

Last week was crazy.

As Judson is quickly approaching midterm, classes have not even considered slowing down. If anything life has gotten more busy and more hectic.

On top of normal school stuff - class, homework, and the likes, some of us had to get ready for a horse show. At least I started the week thinking I was going to have to get ready for a show, than I got sick....

Along with getting back to school, we have gotten back to riding. It was a bit of a slow start; first we had to go over the paper work for the classes and then wait for some ridiculously cold weather to pass. Though many of us would have liked to just get on a horse, it gave us a chance to review and get back in the mindset of riding after a month and a half of non-poniness (yes, I did just make a word, but I could not come up with one already in existence that I liked!)....

Oops. So, I guess I lost track of time, because it has been awhile since I have written. I apologize.

So, school has started and everything is beginning to fall into a schedule. I was hoping that things would be relaxed and calm for a few weeks since it is the beginning of the semester. I mean, it is the end of the semester that is supposed to be busy, right? I guess not, because I must say that this seems to be the busiest I have ever been! I don't know if it is because we are still playing catch up from having two days off of school for bad weather, or if I am just THAT busy....

During the first week of Christmas, I stayed at school with around 20 or 25 other Judson girls for Restoration, a local missions project.

The project came to be because of a Judson student. Over the summer she was inspired to do work to help our community. After much thought and prayer, she started looking in to putting the idea into action....

It was a small space - we had to lay flat on our backs in order to fit - dark, wet, and muddy. Our job was to nail in cross supports. It didn't take long to realize that nailing over our heads was not going to last long....

It feels so good to be back at school.

I am rather surprised to hear myself say that, or is it see myself type those words.

After time at home I generally find myself agonizing over the fact that I have to go back to school. Back to classes, homework, studying, and papers. It is just something I don't want to do and I find myself wishing that I had another day at home to relax, hang out, and mostly just not worry about all of the stuff I have do in the following weeks....

I just love this time of year! The air is cool and crisp and when you walk out of your dorm in the morning to go to class, there is that refreshing campfire smell from the smoke of wood stoves. - Once upon a time, there lived a college student, her roommate and a number of other young women. The girl was beginning to feel slightly sleep deprived from the everyday college life, extra curricular activities, and last, but not least, the group was trying to put on a play. It would be a magnificent play, the finest in the land, but the journey was long with many hills and bumps....

The Equestrian Program at Judson is not large, but then what about Judson is? However, its small size is an advantage; it allows us to have a large range of opportunities that may not be available to larger programs....

Here at Judson we love our horses.

God has blessed us by giving us beautiful horses to ride while we are here at Judson. Part of the responsibility of having these horses is taking care of them and making sure they are healthy. Aside from regular care, good grooming, and proper handling, there are things that have to be done every once in a while to assure that our horses remain healthy....

Monday, Dr. Halbrooks’ Equine Disease Management class and other students in Judson’s Equestrian program were fortunate to have the opportunity to hear Dr. Pugh speak on the subject of Disease management. Dr. Pugh is an equine vet who formally taught at Auburn University and currently works for Fort Dodge, a leading producer in Equine Vaccinations....

The First Of The Firsts

Wow, time really flies when you're are at Judson.

We are right around one month until our first IHSA show for the season and I must say I am both excited and scared.

This is my first year riding on Judson's Equestrian Team. I was part of the Equestrian program last year and took some riding classes....

I must admit that I was not looking forward to classes starting. The idea of sitting in a classroom listening to a professor lecture for at least an hour, two or three times a day, just was not something I was excited about. I was however, anxiously waiting for pony classes to start....

What Happens After Class?

In this blog I am going to try to answer one of the questions that I am most frequently asked concerning Life as a Judson Girl. The question is "what do Judson students do for fun on weekends and in their spare time?" This question is so popular because as I am sure many of you have noticed, either from reading about Judson, visiting Judson, or attending Judson, that it is located in what most people consider a very small town in the middle of no-where....

So with Welcome Week being over many of you may be wondering what is welcome week at Judson?

Well Welcome Week at Judson is the first week that freshmen and transfer students are living on campus. This year the week was kicked off by first time Judson students moving in on the afternoon of Sunday August 16th....

Back To Class

The first full week of classes is done and I don't know of anyone on campus who isn't glad it is the weekend. The first few weeks of school always seem to be the hardest. I guess it is since everyone is still wishing they had just a little bit left of summer, or that they could be back at school just for the social part of college and skip the whole academic part....

I have just begun my second year here at Judson College and have had such an enjoyable experience that I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you, not only some of what Judson College has to offer, but also what it is like to be a Judson Girl....
