  • Christmas Tea and Vespers took place this weekend. I had a lot of fun dressing up with my friends and going to Christmas Tea. Several of us got together and put our make-up on and helped fix each others hair before we headed down to the Parlors. The social committee did a fantastic job decorating Jewett Parlors for Christmas!

The SEC championship football game was going on during the Tea and it was difficult for some of the girls to free themselves from the television. I enjoyed the tea and of course I enjoyed the food. I got to spend some time with a prospective student and a few alumni. I actually saw one of my teachers from the community college I attended. She is a Judson graduate.  It’s funny how often I run into women that attended Judson even when I am miles away from Marion.

After Christmas Tea, we had a few minutes to rest and then it was time for Vespers. The Judson Singers, Faith, and the Hand bell choir did a wonderful job at Vespers. I believe that they performed many of the Christmas favorites.  My little sister Audra is in all three groups and she did a fantastic job.

At Judson campus activities are so accessible. If a girl makes the time to participate in events, she will become a very busy young lady. I personally enjoy the opportunity to be active in my college experience. One of the “selling points” of Judson is that women have the opportunity to take on leadership roles that would not otherwise be available at other schools.  A Judson woman has the chance to be class officer or maybe SGA president. The one thing that we know for sure is that there will be a woman filling all student lead roles on campus. I can not help but to feel slightly empowered by that fact. My little sister Audra takes full advantage of the opportunity to take on leadership, as do many of us.

Well, that is all for now. Finals are swiftly approaching… Time to rest before there is no time to sleep at all!

  • Basketball season is in full swing. My little sister Brittany is a member of the team, and I enjoyed going to her game against Stillman. Judson lost the game, but they played well from my prospective. I know that it is frustrating to lose games, but I know that the team will improve as the season progresses. The team did extremely well at a tournament at Atlanta Christian at the beginning of the month. Hopefully the girls will gain some momentum with a win against Concordia on Dec. 1st.

I am excited that Tennis season will begin in January. We have hit the ball around a little this month, and I can’t wait for practice to begin. I wrote a few weeks ago about my foot injury and as of now it is not completely healed. I hope to be back in good shape by the first of the year.

This semester seems to be flying by quickly. I am not going to lie it has been extremely busy and very difficult. This week we had Thanksgiving break! I looked forward to a break from school work all month. I enjoyed my time off and my time with my family. I meant to do more school work over the break, but I did work a lot during my time at home. A Judson Alum goes to my home church, and she asked me if I wanted to work over the break. Of course, as a college student, I need the money so I said “YES!” I got to work quite a bit towards the beginning of the week.

On Thursday, I cooked a Thanksgiving meal along with my mom and my grandmother. I had so much fun hanging out with my family. I went to my dad’s house on Friday after a bit of Black Friday shopping, and before I knew it my break was over.

It is amazing how time flies. Today, I drove to Greenville to pick up my roommate so that we could head back to Judson. As I drove down highway 5, I could not help but get excited as I crossed over the Perry County line. It is funny how when we are leaving Judson for a break or for the weekend we get  excited because we get to get out of Marion for a few days, yet on the way back in we get so excited to return. I am sure that it is totally normal for college students to want to get away from school work but to want to spend time with their friends. HaHa I wonder if we could talk the world into letting those between the ages of 18 and 22 spend time with their friends rather than doing “work.”

Speaking of “work,” I need to get to the assignments that I neglected while on break.

Finals are in two weeks! YIKES! I’ll let you know how that goes!

Hockey Day weekend finally arrived. Friday at lunch, we had the festivities that precede Hockey Day. Each of the classes sang songs that they wrote about Hockey and Sisterhood. As a senior, of course, I say that the senior song was the best although the underclassmen did a great job with their songs as well.

This week the third-year seniors worked on a tradition known as Wishing Well, a play about our years at Judson. I was given the task to play Mrs. Fowler, the Vice-President of Judson. I had fun acting like her. I walked around with pumpkin earrings in my ears and a camera around my neck. The camera was an important part of my costume. Mrs. Fowler is always taking pictures! Seniors practiced for Wishing Well every night this week.  We even had practice at 8 am this morning.

Today was a wonderful day. First, the seniors won the Senior vs. Junior/Frosh game. The Junior/Frosh team is made up of Freshmen and Sophomores. On the last day of practice this week, the two teams came together to choose an all-star team. The girls that were selected for the team played the alumni that returned to Judson for Hockey Day. The all-star team won their game against the alums. I remember playing on the all-star team last year. The game was so intense. The all-stars last year lost, so, I was proud of the girls for winning this year.

After the all-star game, all of the Alums and current students present gathered on the front steps of Jewett for a step sing. During most of the special occasions at Judson, we have step sings. All of the Judson ladies gather together to sing songs that have been around Judson for many many years. It is so cool that we know the same songs that the Alums who graduated years ago know. We sang silly songs like “Candy and Cake” and “Bad Girl.” We also sang some of the more serious songs like “Swing Low” and “Marion.”

At the conclusion of the step sing we had lunch, and then the third years presented Wishing Well. We had so much fun remembering events that took place over the years.  We acted out the time that Bailey didn’t add water to her Ramen noodles and the noodles caught on fire in the microwave. We also acted out some of the crazy events that took place during out Pageant last year.

All of the events of the day went well. I loved all of the weekend’s traditions. Hockey Day = FUN! I look forward to next year!

This week I had the opportunity to attend the Alabama Reading Association Conference in Birmingham. Three of my classmates made the trip as well. Wednesday morning we loaded up the car at 6:30, and drove to the BJCC. We went to general sessions and concurrent sessions all day. Our teacher surprised us with a trip to “The Club” for lunch in between sessions. It was cheaper to eat there than at the conference. They charged $15 per meal at the conference. Can you imagine paying that much for a turkey sandwich in a box?

At the end of the day, we checked into our hotel and just hung out. That night, we went to our Dr. McCorquodale’s home for supper. She cooked a wonderful meal, and I enjoyed eating with her and her husband. Soon after supper, Dr. McCorquodale and her husband left to attend choir practice at church. I along with my classmates Anna, Bailey, and Heather stayed at the house. Anna sat down at the piano, and we sang for a really long time. Then, Bailey taught me to play chess while we gave our voices a break from singing. I had so much fun that night. It was a much needed break from schoolwork. When we made it back to the hotel room, we laughed and laughed. I developed better friendships with my classmates while we were in Birmingham.

On Thursday, we went back to the conference for several more sessions. I enjoyed many of them, and I learned a lot about teaching Reading.

The trip was made possible by a grant, and I am really glad that I got to go. Not only did I learn about reading, I also learned a lot about my classmates and Dr. McCorquodale along the way. How often do you get to go to a state conference with your professor? At what other school do you know your professor so well that you can sit down to supper in her home? Small class sizes and wonderful teachers are two of the many reason I love Judson. What a wonderful opportunity we have here…
