Freshman/Out-of-State Blog

Mary attended Judson College during the fall semester of 2009. She was a freshman from Oregon. These are her archived blog entries.

  •      Howdy ya'll! (I'm trying to be creative when it comes to the greetings!) Anyway, I had a wonderful birthday! It began with a loud wakeup call from Gussie yelling "Happy Birthday!" I finally got to open the present my parents had sent! I was right!! It was perfume... but they surprised me with a camera! It is blue and I love it! The best part... or rather the most memorable part of my birthday was when Kasey smashed my face into the birthday cake! Not very glamorous but very funny!! I am so thankful for all my friends who made my birthday so special!

This next week of school is going to be busy. I am trying my best to make it to as many study sessions as I can... especially for math! Last week I went to the math study session and, oh my goodness, it helped a lot! I am also hoping to attend church on Wednesday this week:) One thing that really astonished me about Alabama is how many churches there are... driving down the road I am sure I saw a church every 5 minutes! Once, traveling down the interstate, I saw a sign that said "Go to church or the devil will get you." That was cool!

Judson College has many, many traditions and one very special one is the Big- Little Sister tradition! The freshman girls pick someone from the sophomore class to be their "big sister!" My real-life little sister, Hannah, is so special to me and I miss her very much!! I hope she decides to come to Judson:) This past month has been such an adventure. Life becomes a whole lot more crazy when you are away from everything familiar! You recognize qualities about yourself... the good and the bad. I've learned to put my trust in the Lord and His plan even if things seem uncertain. Talk to you later.

Hi! Today is the last day I'm going to be eighteen! I'll only be a teenager for one more year... it's sort of freaky! I received a gift in the mail and I promised my mom I would not open it until my birthday tomorrow! I'm a master at guessing gifts so I tried not to even look at the pretty box when I hid it from myself in the closet.

Classes are great this week! I did a good job on my test in Health and Fitness and I'm really enjoying my Art Appreciation and History classes. Oh, this was embarrassing! On Monday, I missed my math class because I didn't wake up to my alarm clock! I have issues when it comes to getting up early. I may need to put the alarm clock on my desk across the room so I'm forced to get up in the morning!

Yesterday, I finally got to go shopping at Walmart! Thank the Lord because I was out of Shampoo and the drain in our shower needed some Liquid Plummer... like PRONTO!! On our way back to Judson, Gussie managed to miss hitting a raccoon but she totally drilled a frog hopping across the road! It was sad but very funny!

There was a humongous thunder storm last night complete with high winds and lighting! It is slightly unnerving how fast the weather changes over here in Alabama. Oh! On Sunday, Gussie and I finally got a pet!! We had wanted one for a long time and after careful consideration we decided to get a turtle! "Sheldon" is adorable and I think he likes his new home:) Talk to you later!

Hey Y'all!! Oh my goodness, I had the most fun weekend! It was completely unexpected because most of my friends were going home for Labor Day weekend and I couldn't find someone to drive me to Oregon. Thank the Lord for my dear friend Amanda who at the last minute invited me to her house!! I didn't realize how deprived I was in life until Sunday when I went four-wheeling!! It was So MUCH FUN!! I also had a blast watching the University of Alabama beat Virginia Tech!! ROLL TIDE!!

It's just amazing that I'm already heading into my fourth week at Judson College... weird! Oh! This past Saturday I went to the Cresting Ceremony at Marion Military Institute. It was cool watching the new students march around and officially become Cadets. I'm really enjoying all my classes and I'm thinking of joining the Earth Team which is lead by the brilliant biology teacher Dr. Wilson. Tomorrow I have a test in my Health and Fitness class that I haven't studied for yet... but I'm sure it won't be too bad.

As you know this little southern college has many traditions and one of them is the Presidents Reception. Unfortunately, a lot of the girls are sick so they are going to reschedule it... probably not anytime soon though. My best friend during these uncertain times is Lysol and I'm constantly harassed by my suite mate Sarah because of my consistent hand washing... but I haven't gotten sick so it must be working!! Praise God!

My mom is sending me a few presents for my birthday this week:) and I look forward to all the calls from home! The Lord has given me so much and I'm so happy I decided to come all the way from Oregon to Alabama! Talk to you later

Hello blog readers!! It's now been fourteen days since I moved in and WOW it's gone by very fast!! During the first week all us freshman girls were literally running around getting our classes sorted and preparing for a fun weekend!! Rose Sunday, which was first recognized in 1915, is one of many Judson College traditions and I was exceedingly proud to be a part of it! I also had an amazing time during Marion Matters! Judson gave us the opportunity to serve the community of Marion and I decided to help out at Perry Lakes Park!! I climbed a hundred foot birding tower and had an amazing time discovering this hidden park which is so full of life!!

Only twenty days until my birthday:) I'll be turning nineteen... I feel so old!! It's going to be a little bit sad not being with family but I think my roommate is planning a surprise party that I don't know about... Um, now that I have all my classes figured out its safe to say that my favorite class is Art Appreciation! At the moment my major is Elementary Education but I'm kind of wondering if I would rather be an Art Major... I'm just not sure yet. I started my work study last Wednesday! I'm so thankful I get to work in the barn because horses have always been a part of my life. Unfortunately, I'm even more confused now because Equine Science sounds like something I would also really love!

Last night was fun and at one point very eventful. My friends and I watched Beauty and the Beast while managing to completely miss dinner not realizing it starts early on the weekends... but we found some Lucky Charms cereal! I had never seen a cockroach before last night... I don't think we have them in Oregon. Anyway, this one was a giant! My friend Julie found it in her dorm room and before she could get close, it escaped!! We went on a roach hunt but couldn't find it until someone screamed! We chased it down the hallway and accidently into Brittany's room... but don't worry we left her a note warning of the intruder! Until next time:)
