MEET THE PROFESSOR

Dr. Ray Price was born the son of a minister and became accustomed to moving around often in his life. He can remember the one place his family remained the longest was Sanford, N.C. When he first visited the Judson College campus in 1979, he immediately felt at home in the town of Marion, which appealed to him because of its "Andy Griffith-like atmosphere."

He first realized he had a knack for numbers as a high school student. He had never really seen himself becoming a math teacher but it just eventually "all made sense." Before Judson, Dr. Price spent two years volunteering in the Peace Corps and taught secondary school mathematics to students at a small village boarding school in Juaben-Ashanti, Ghana, West Africa. There was no electricity or running water at either the school or the village, and Dr. Price lived in a commune area.

Dr. Price believes he is much more serious as a teacher than he was as a student, because he feels a sense of duty and doesn't want to let anyone down. He spends so much time at Judson that his family often has to come to the campus to find him! Dr. Price enjoys living close to campus. It takes less than 3 minutes for him to ride his bicycle the few blocks from his house to Judson.

Dr. Price has been a judge for the statewide Alabama High School Mathematics Contest and has, among other things, coordinated the annual Alabama Association of College Teachers of Mathematics meeting at Judson in 1995. In 2004, he coordinated the annual State Mathematical Association of America (MAA) dinner / speaker together with the Alabama Association of Mathematics (AACTM) at Judson. He has been the church organist at St. Wilfrid's Episcopal Church in Marion since 1989. Dr. Price is currently Vice President of the AACTM, and a member of the board of Alabama Journal of Mathematics.

When he is not teaching, Dr. Price enjoys doing construction work on old houses, whether building a structure to raise a house off the ground or electrical work. He taught himself how to do most of this by way of "How-To" books and YouTube. Dr. Price is married to Ann Rankin Price, a 1975 Judson graduate, and they have two daughters, Mary and Caroline. Mary is a piano major at the University of Houston, and Caroline, a 2010 Judson graduate, attends medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

"I don't feel lacking in Marion. I can't wait to be around people each day. This place just suited my lifestyle. I never had to debate about coming back after I got my Ph.D." - Dr. Ray Price
