FACULTY PROFILE
SCOTT W. BULLARD
Interim Vice President and Academic Dean
Phone: (334) 683-5284
At Judson College since 2008
"I want my students to see how the Bible came to be... I want them to understand basic theology and biblical themes. If they want to do ministry in a church one day, then they need to know the language of the Scripture and the church. If they want to do missions one day, I want mission agencies to be proud to be able to say they have a candidate from Judson College. " - Scott Bullard
EDUCATION
AREAS OF EXPERTISE Historical Theology, Sacramental Theology
Though born and raised in Laurinburg, NC, Religion Professor Dr. Scott Bullard said he had always known about Judson College. Or rather, he had always known about "The Judsons" - Adoniram Judson and the college's namesake, Ann Judson. Both his Grandfather and Great Grandfather were named Judson after the couple, and Dr. Bullard named his own son Judson. Despite his familiarity with Judson's history, Dr. Bullard admits he was a little hesitant about working for an all-female institution at first but now enjoys "the uniqueness of the college," that he says allows "women to find their true selves" while giving them the freedom to come into their own. Dr. Bullard attended Duke Divinity School to get his Master of Divinity with plans to become a Methodist pastor. However, those plans changed after he befriended a Baptist professor and began attending his church. It wasn't long before he too adopted the Baptist denomination as his own. Dr. Bullard's goal for the Religion Department at Judson is to see more religion majors get into accredited seminaries and to continue to form students prepared for Church ministry and missions. He enjoys teaching the most when he sees the "light bulb" of understanding turn on in a student's head for the first time. Dr. Bullard is married to Shannon, a New Jersey native who prefers the slow, comfortable pace of the South. According to Dr. Bullard, Shannon's heritage keeps their lifestyle interesting during the holidays and he can never tell when he may find himself "enjoying a Yankees' game in New York or eating at a hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant in New Jersey." They have four children - Judson, Desmond, Campbell and Walker. One of the most interesting things Dr. Bullard has ever done was backpack through Scotland for a whole summer. He recalls doing odd jobs with friends there, sheltering with a Catholic priest and hiking the mountains at midnight. Having always been an athlete, Dr. Bullard enjoys hiking, basketball and, occasionally, can be found practicing at some sports with the Judson Eagles teams.
