SOCIAL WORK

  *Accreditation Notice*

OUR MISSION:  Integrating "Knowledge and Faith for a Purposeful Life".

The Judson College Social Work Program will prepare confident and capable entry-level social workers for generalist practice and encourage lifelong personal, professional, and spiritual growth.

Graduates of Judson's BSW Program become eligible for advanced standing in an MSW program.

The Bachelor of Social Work Program will educate and empower students to respond to the various needs of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, living in poverty, and will particularly highlight the diverse needs of the Black Belt.

OUR PURPOSE:  To Empower To Serve.

Judson remains true to her mission to provide a Christ-centered and Student-centered environment encouraging personal, professional, and spiritual growth. The Judson College Social Work Program is devoted to the success of her students, fostering a Christian atmosphere congruent with the Social Work Code of Ethics.

1).  To Empower:

Believing in God also means believing in ourselves and each other.  The Social Work Program of Judson College will promote:

  • Self-belief
  • Discipline
  • Growth
  • And a conviction to better the lives of others

We will endow our Social Work students with the necessary tools to complete their mission while complying with all Social Work standards.

2).  To Serve:

What better place than a women's Christian college, to have a selfless yet self-fulfilling "mission" field that promotes service to all in need.  Judson realizes that Jesus is the true "Social Worker"; but what a service to Him to live, not only our personal lives, but professional lives as well, in service to Him and those in need.

By graduation, our BSW students will have demonstrated:

  • Identification as a professional Social Worker - knowledge of the historical co-development of social welfare, evidence of self-reflection and self-correction, ability to respond appropriately to professional boundaries, an interest in career long learning and effective use of supervision.
  • Evidence of critical thinking - ability to apply the social work values and ethics to common practice standards; effective communication skills both orally and written; ability to find and evaluate sources of professional and case-related information, etc.
  •   Engagement with issues of diversity and difference - awareness of the impact of culture on oppression and on the differential advantage/disadvantages available to groups in society; ability to engage with and critical review of their personal bias, and ability to view self as a learner of client systems.
  • Awareness and respect for human rights and social and economic justice
  • Effective use of research in their practice
  • Ability to apply principles and theories of human behavior in the social environment in the classroom and in student practice.

ACCREDITATION & JUDSON

Our BSW program was accepted into candidacy for accreditation in the Fall of 2009. We have been, and will be, working closely with the Council on Social Work Education as we go through the Accreditation Process, which is a lengthy process. Our BSW program has received approval from CSWE for our first two visits from them. (CSWE's third visit will occur in October 2012.) Judson's BSW program has already received full approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

ONCE THE PROGRAM IS ACCREDITED, STUDENTS:

  •  Must go through an admittance procedure in order to get into the program - this could include the student submitting an essay and being interviewed by the department panel.
  •  Graduates will have the option to sit for the State Licensure exam, in the state of their choosing

STUDENTS CAN BEGIN NOW, AND JUST LOOK AT THE BENEFITS!     This accreditation is retroactive, so students interested in the BSW at Judson can begin their coursework now.  In the Fall of 2010, the SW program at Judson began offering a full set of Social Work classes.

The BSW Program will consist of 55 credit hours of required classes and 450 hours of field human services agency field work taken over the student's last three semesters of college.* Once Judson's BSW Program receives full accreditation, graduates of the program will become eligible for advanced standing in an MSW program. Advanced standing means that students skip the first year of a two year MSW program, which is a huge benefit!

* The BSW Field Program does not accept life experience and/or previous work or volunteer experience for academic credit nor for the required 450 hours of field experience.
