MEET THE PROFESSOR

by Grace Powell
Judson College Student Writer

An avid traveler between his college assignments, Dr. Allen Stata settled down in Marion in the fall of 2009. His intent was to help Judson College's new social work department grow into a four-year program.

He was born in the panhandle of the Sunshine State (Florida), and then later moved to the suburbs of Massachusetts.

He met his wife of 37 years, Kristen, in Boston, while studying for his bachelors. They later settled in Cape Cod where Stata was a social worker for the state department. He also lived in two other suburbs of Boston-- Cambridge and Summerville--where he worked in the Department of Social Services and Child Welfare.

In the early 1980's, Stata wished to go into teaching so he earned his Ph.D. in Education from the Florence Heller School of Brandeis University in Boston.

Stata embarked on his teaching dreams, beginning in Louisiana. He spent two years at Grambling State University. His next stop was Florida Atlantic Metropolitan University in Tallahassee. After teaching there for two years, he made a cross-country journey to Eastern New Mexico University, located 25 miles west of the Texas border.

In his seven year stay at ENWU, Stata said he was never around much water! There was no standing water, and the only lake (or small pond) was nearly 82 miles away.

One of the most memorable thoughts he has of New Mexico was, when he drove his car down the highway. "It was as if I was driving on the road to the horizon, with nothing in between but several ghost towns," he said.

In addition to his teaching experience, Stata has worked as a school-based therapist and in private practice.

"Social work is a profession for those with a strong desire to help improve people's lives," Stata said. "Job prospects are expected to be favorable, particularly for social workers who specialize in the aging population or work in rural areas."

In his free time, Stata enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, sailing, and flying, as well as, photography, theater and travel.
