Religious Studies:

Missiology

Live Serve Love Believe

What Is Missiology?
Missiology is the area of practical theology that investigates the mandate, message and work of the Christian missionary.

Missiology is a "calling." Have you ever felt that you were meant for something more personally meaningful in life than simply attending college to obtain a degree with the intent of entering the work force? Have you ever heard someone speak about their experiences in a foreign land, helping others and spreading the word of God (much like Judson's own Ann Hasseltine Judson), and found yourself amazed by their courage and determination?  Does sharing your faith with others give you a feeling of purpose?

Our area of emphasis in Missiology addresses all of these questions.

Missiology At Judson
As a Religious Studies major at Judson College, you will have the opportunity to complete requirements for the area of emphasis in Missiology - meaning you will take all courses required of the Religious Studies major, but can tailor your electives to include special courses focused specifically on missions. With Judson's long-standing history of emphasizing missions, particularly in a setting designed specifically for young Christian women, we offer the perfect atmosphere for a student of any background to grow academically, spiritually and socially. Travel to Africa to spread the word of God to villagers, much as Laura and Keri did their senior years. Help build a home for a needy family like Ryan and Amanda did during their Christmas vacation. Or teach under priveleged children how to read in our very own Marion, Ala., like Bethany during her summer mission internship.

We can't tell you where your journey will take you... Plotting the course is all up to you. But with our emphasis in Missiology, we'll make sure you have the necessary tools to get you where you need to be.

"Judson has strengthened my faith by showing me God's work firsthand.  Participating in various service learning projects has taught me to be better in Christ through acquiring new leadership skills and seeing the needs in everyday communities. Judson empowers us to be women of knowledge and faith, both interchangeable, yet equal in importance to completely fulfilling God's plan for our lives."

                          - Ryan, Secondary Ed. major

Our Missiology courses focus on the biblical, historical, and theological foundations of the Christian church's self-understood vocation of embodying the core aspects of the Christian faith for teaching others. You will study religion itself and the many ways of devotion within other religions in the world.

And you will learn about the challenges you could face as a missionary in the world.

What You Can "Do" With A Religious Studies Degree, Emphasis In Missiology
As a student at one of America's Best Christian Colleges, your learning will take you far beyond the academic classroom. The world will be your classroom. With an emphasis in Missiology, you could find yourself doing any number of things, including:

  • Mission work, at home or abroad
  • Working for or teaching at a church while earning academic credit through our internship program
  • Working for a non-profit organization
  • Preparing to obtain a graduate degree
  • Anything you can dream of!

Our Service Learning Opportunities Are The Best Foundation
You will find many opportunities to serve the Marion community while a student at Judson. Our campus happens to be located within an area of the state in which needs are numerous. Annually, our Office of Faith-Based Service and Learning offers opportunities for students to get involved. Likewise, our Campus Ministries organization hosts events, concerts and community service projects that seek to encourage even the shyest of students to take part. A few of our annual events and opportunities include:

  • Marion Matters - the whole campus gets involved in a day of helping others at various projects throughout the Marion community.
  • Christian Concerts - past concerts have included entertainment from Raining Ami and Red Letter Affair.
  • Awakening - our weekly evening student worship service.
  • Halloween Treats on Bibb Street - free event filled with games and fun for children in the community.
  • Many more!
