Why Nursing?

Nursing is a career field that is experiencing huge shortages. Recent studies have depicted that RN employment will grow 23 percent from 2006 to 2016 and most entry level nurses can expect to earn anywhere from $45,000 to $87,200 annually.

Registered nurses make up the majority of workers in the health care industry, holding positions of seniority over licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants. Not only that, but in an economy where many other career fields are being tested, a position as an RN provides job security. An RN program in the Black Belt area where Judson College is located only makes sense in that our students are already involved in community service activities that both support and aim to improve the health and overall well-being for the people of rural Alabama.

As a registered nurse, you can expect to have such job responsibilities as:

  • Observing and recording patient medical history and symptoms
  • Establishing a plan of care for patients or adding to an existing one then putting the plan into action
  • Managing and assigning tasks to licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants
  • Advising and providing emotional support for patients and their families, and
  • Many more!

As a nursing student at Judson College, you will take a leading role in the ongoing effort to enroll Perry County Children in health insurance programs. For nearly a decade, Judson students and faculty have been partnering with local and state agencies to raise awareness of the availability of government health insurance programs such as AllKids and Medicaid for Families.  In recent years, students have offered application assistance to families who wish to apply for these services.

Nursing students at Judson College will find ample opportunities to put skills they are developing in the classrooms and laboratories to good use in the field during their time at Judson.
