HISTORY DEPARTMENT “Studying the Past, To Understand the Present, In Order to Create the Future” History comes alive at Judson College. The Discipline of History is one which one enters and spends a lifetime of exploration, study, reading, research, analysis, and publishing. Students at Judson College have the chance to explore the riches and diversity which history has to offer. From ancient times and the glories and riches of Greece and the Roman Empire; to the Middle Ages and the glories of architecture, religion, art, and philosophy; to the richness of American History, from colonial times to the present; the student at Judson College has a wide choice. Beyond Judson College and Marion, Alabama, the student has the chance to study the histories of Greece, Rome, Russia, China, Japan, Latin America, and Europe. The Department has plans for an overseas trip in the 2013-2014 academic year. Within the territory of Alabama, students have the chance to study the pre-Columbian period of North America by traveling to nearby Moundville in order to learn of the lives of early Native Americans. Trips to the areas around Mobile help to clarify for those interested, the times when the coastal regions were controlled by the Spanish and the British. Antebellum plantations are available for students to visit and study as they learn about tobacco and King Cotton. In the 20th century, the cities of Marion and Selma played a pivotal role in the modern Civil Rights movement. Judson students are active in working to preserve history in the local area. Ongoing projects have included mapping and cataloguing the Marion City Cemetery, taping oral histories of local civil rights leaders, and participating in the regional Phi Alpha Theta conferences. The oral history project resulted in a live oral history presentation to the college and the local community in the fall semester of 2011. The B. A. degree in History provides students with the tools they need for a wide variety of professions. Graduates of the B. A. in History have found employment in schools, libraries, museums, business archives, and civil service jobs. Many have chosen to further their education by working towards graduate degrees in history, law, political sciences, public policy, library science, and education. Come join us at Judson College to begin a journey of discovery. For further information, contact
