MEET THE PROFESSOR

Born in Alabama to a Methodist pastor and an elementary school teacher, Dr. Hall moved with his family quite a bit, but they settled in Panama City, Florida for most of his childhood. After his freshman year of college at Gulf Coast Community College, he began learning Spanish on a trip to Costa Rica to visit a friend. He returned to the U.S., chose Spanish as his major, and at age 20 got his first teaching experience back in Costa Rica. Teaching children ages 8-12 was a "very interesting" experience and almost made him decide not to pursue teaching as a career, until his last day on the job.  His students gave him a surprise farewell party complete with notes, gifts, hugs, and tears, and he then realized the impact he'd had on them.

From there he completed B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish, and taught Spanish and/or English in many places, including Florida, Indiana, Missouri, West Virginia, and Guatemala.  His previous teaching position at Glenville State College in West Virginia prepared him well for the challenges here at Judson.  There he got a new Spanish Education major off the ground with a redesign of the Spanish curriculum and the implementation of a summer study abroad program.  Under Dr. Hall's instruction, Glenville's first Spanish major completed the new Spanish program, graduated, and is now the Spanish teacher at the local high school.  Dr. Hall remembers, "It was a proud moment when she passed the Praxis Spanish Knowledge Test on her first attempt."

According to Dr. Hall, study abroad is "one of the best and fastest ways to educate students in a foreign language and culture."  He has taken students to Spain and Costa Rica and hopes to organize programs for Judson students in Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Dr. Hall actually has a home in Guatemala, where his wife is from, and they spend time there each year, but they currently reside in Hoover, Alabama with their two sons.

His foreign travel experiences include time in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Spain, and Italy. In addition to traveling, Dr. Hall enjoys exercising and working outdoors, and is "pretty fair" at carpentry and repair work.

Of his Judson experience so far, Dr. Hall says, "I really enjoy the dedication of the students and their willingness to learn. My colleagues here are great and make me feel very welcome and at home."
