PSYCHOLOGY

What will a degree in Psychology at Judson College give you?

How about a head start! The Psychology program at Judson is designed to jump start your professional development in professions such as: Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, and/or Marriage and Family Therapy. You may complete your B.S. or B.A. degree at Judson with a major in Psychology in just three years, giving you a head start in graduate school, work, or a combination of the two. Within the Department of Social Science, Psychology majors can also select a minor field of study in; Criminal Justice, Sociology or Social Work.

For several years, Psychology has been one of the most popular majors at Judson College. At Judson, you will profit from instruction under an outstanding faculty (not graduate students), who speak from years of professional experience.

All of the professors in our psychology department hold terminal degrees in their field. Students appreciate the low faculty to student ratio (12:1) and the extensive personal attention given.

One of our goals at Judson College - Department of Psychology, is to give our graduates quality academic instruction coupled with direct field experience to successfully begin a career at the bachelor's level or to advance to graduate study in a variety of psychology related fields.

While at Judson you will have the opportunity to conduct relevant research projects as part of the core curriculum. Recently, some of our psychology majors conducted research into the life-span rate in Alabama's Black Belt region and came up with some very interesting results! For instance, did you know that there is one city in the Black Belt area where the average life span for women is considerably longer than in others! Furthermore, our upper-level psychology majors are participating in a service learning project to develop a systematic behavioral observation scale and to use this assessment tool for helping our local HHead-Start Centers better meet the needs of their students. Hands on learning and guided field experience are just a few of the many innovative tools for learning you will find waiting for you at Judson.

In addition to the excellent academic opportunities, The Psychology Department maintains a student departmental club: Psych-Key, which is intended to give students an opportunity for extra-curricular activities such as:

· community service,

· field trips to regional mental health centers, day treatment programs and hospitals,

· as well as visits to career and graduate school days at selected colleges and universities.

Psych-Key is a student initiated and administered organization. The club invites professionals from a wide range of mental health and psychology related fields to come to the Judson campus and to present up-to-date information on the advancements in their professions. These networking of opportunities allow our psychology majors the opportunity make professional contacts that enhance the quality of their education while at Judson and to have a head start in the career search when they graduate.

If you are seeking an excellent education that will help prepare you for a rewarding career, come let the Department of Psychology at Judson College give you the head start that you're looking for.
