10/15/2007 - Alabama Baptist Convention President Sponsors 'Judson Day' in Trussville Church
Alabama Baptist Convention president Dr. Roger Willmore sponsored "Judson Day" at Deerfoot Baptist Church in Trussville on Sept. 16. "I thought this would be a way to emphasize the good things that are happening at Judson," Willmore said. "I wanted to lend whatever influence I have as convention president this year to a school I knew little about until the last three years." Willmore served as first vice-president of the convention for two years prior to his current one-year term as president. He is in his third year as pastor at Deerfoot. "Attending board meetings and other functions at Judson has given me a new appreciation for the school," he said. "I actually knew little about the college in my previous ministry positions, and I regret this now. I believe Judson is a great place and God is doing great things there." Willmore said three of his young people are now Judson students, Elizabeth and Hannah Tucker and Kim Lincoln, but that this wasn't his main motivation to sponsor the special day. "These are fine young women," he said, "but whether our church has students at Judson or not wasn't my motivation. I wanted to affirm the college and encourage other pastors to do what we did here. It was a wonderful service and our people were blessed." "Judson Day" featured a message by college president Dr. David Potts and music by choral director Dr. Lanny McManus. Birmingham physician Dr. Judi Favor, immediate past chairwoman of the Judson board of trustees, also attended and gave a greeting to the Deerfoot congregation. The church hosted a luncheon following morning worship for the Judson guests and for high school junior and senior girls and their parents. “We are so very grateful to Dr. Willmore and the Deerfoot congregation for 'Judson Day,'" Potts said. "Christian higher education and Judson College are strengthened by this event. We hope that it will serve as a worthy example to the churches across our convention.” |
