12/9/2007 - Handel's 'Messiah' to be presented in Marion

The Marion community's annual presentation of George Frederic Handel's oratorio, "The Messiah," will be at the Marion Presbyterian Church on Dec. 9.

Marion Presbyterian choir members will be joined by family members, former choir members, friends from choirs in the community and singers from Alabama and Georgia.

"This has become an annual reunion event for families and singers," said Judson College professor of music Dr. Betty Campbell who will direct the presentation for the 22nd consecutive season.

Soloists include Richard Morthland, tenor, a retired banker from Selma in his 21st performance; Marion native Ann Snow Duraski, mezzo-soprano, who is a well-known singer of opera, oratorio and concerts in the U.S. and Europe; Lydia Campbell Howland, soprano, who has sung opera, oratorio, and concerts in Austria, Germany and the U.S.; Dr. Lanny McManus, tenor, chair of the department of music at Judson College, who has sung opera, oratorio and recitals in South Carolina, Arkansas, and Bulgaria; Dr. Gerald Anderson, bass, a dentist and soloist at the First Baptist Church in Selma and Arlene Phillips, soprano, who is a well-known artist performer in the local area.

Guest organist will be Sarah Morelock, organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Selma, who will return for her sixth Marion performance.

Trumpeter is Judson student Amanda McKinney who is first chair trumpeter of the Marion Military Institute Band,

According to Campbell, the performance will be dedicated to the memory of those in local church congregations who died in 2007.

The performance begins at 5 p.m. The public is cordially invited.
