11/30/2007 - Mathews to join Judson College as Vice President for Advancement

Judson College announces the appointment of Joseph W. "Bill" Mathews Jr. as Vice President for Institutional Advancement, effective January 1.

In this position, Mathews will direct the division of the college that includes development, alumnae affairs and public relations.

Mathews most recently served as General Counsel for Samford University and was Vice-President for Business Affairs and General Counsel at Samford for seven years.

Mathews earned the A.A. degree from Marion Military Institute, the B.A. from Birmingham Southern College and the J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University. He did additional study at the University of Florida earning an L.L.M. degree in tax in 1981.

Mathews was a partner in the Birmingham law firm of Lange, Simpson, Robinson and Somerville for 30 years prior to his work at Samford. While in private practice he was listed in "Best Lawyers in America." His many civic activities include the Industrial Development Board of the city of Homewood, the Homewood Environmental Commission, the Shades Mountain Rotary Club and the Governor's Black Belt Action Commission Subcommittee for Marketing and Tourism.

He was awarded the "Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award" by Judson College in 2000.

Mathews and his wife Melinda live in Homewood.
