2/21/2008 - Three students to represent Judson at NYC Conference

Three Judson students will attend the 52nd "United Nations Commission on the Status of Women" in New York City later this month.

UNCSW is a two-week event dedicated to promoting global gender equality and the advancement of women. Representatives of member states gather each year at the U.N. to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges and set international standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. Lobbyists, NGO representatives and field practitioners concerned with women’s global status attend the UNCSW both to lobby the commission about specific areas of interest and to create networks to discuss specific issues pertaining to issues that face women around the world.

Susan Jones, Judson's director of Faith-Based Service and Learning, who attended the 2007 commission as a representative of the Baptist World Alliance, organized this unique opportunity for three students: Amy Butler of Tuscaloosa, Keri Reeves of Hamilton, and Fightress Stallworth of Camden. The students were chosen after they submitted entries in a campus-wide essay contest.

In addition to learning from and networking with current global leaders in international women’s work, Judson students will also have an opportunity to network with other young leaders during a weekend debriefing session with students from other colleges and universities. Upon their return to Marion, Judson students will organize an event to share the information they glean from the commission with others.

Jones was pleasantly surprised with the results of the contest.

“I was impressed not only with the number and quality of applicants, but also with the depth of thought that I saw in their essays,” she said. “I’m excited to be able to provide this sort of hands-on learning experience for our students.”

The students selected are also thrilled.

“Conversing with women from all over the world about universal issues will not only be an educational experience, but also a very enlightening and empowering one,” Stallworth said. “I can’t wait!”
