5/22/2008 - Biology students chosen for medical internship

By Dr. Brian Burnes, Professor of Biology

Judson students Keri Reeves of Hamilton and Tonya Morgan of Woodville have been named interns in the 2008 Summer Pre-Medical Rural Internship Program sponsored by the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board.

This eight-week program commences June 2 and will give students experience in rural primary care by providing experiences beyond those available in a large institution or urban environment. The program will be hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Huntsville Regional Medical campus.

Each student will be awarded a $3,000 stipend to compensate for housing, transportation and other needs.

Reeves and Morgan will live in Huntsville for the first three weeks of the program working at the hospital and "shadowing" physicians representing various areas of medicine. They will return to their hometowns for the following four weeks and shadow a local rural family practice physician. This practice will give students hands-on experience in the field of family practice medicine and an understanding of the importance of doctor-patient relations. Students will return to Huntsville the eighth week to create and share a final presentation.

Morgan is a graduate of Kate D. Smith DAR High School and Reeves is a graduate of Hamilton High School.
