5/4/2008 - Area singers join to honor music teacher, Judson Alumna The Betty Sue Shepherd Memorial Concert is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the Jemison Concert Hall at the Alys Stephens Center, and will feature a festival choir made up of singers from throughout the community performing Mozart’s Requiem. Additionally, one of Dr. Shepherd’s former students, Dawson Hull, will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concert No. 1 as a tribute to his mentor and teacher. Hull is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Dr. Terre Johnson will conduct the Southeast Chamber Orchestra and a 200-voice festival choir consisting of singers from The Birmingham Concert Chorale, The Cahaba Chorale, The Baptist Church of the Covenant, Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, The Mississippi University for Women, and Vestavia Hills High School. Soloists for the Mozart Requiem will include Sharon Lawhon, Soprano; Amy Murphy, Mezzo-Soprano; Roderick George, Tenor; and G. William Bugg, Bass. Judson College alumna Dr. Betty Sue Shepherd was legendary throughout the Southeast as a brilliant performer and consummate teacher. In 1994 she was named Alumna of the Year by Judson College. She passed away in 2007 after teaching for 50 years at Samford University, and serving for 38 years as organist at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. The members of the Vestavia Hills Baptist Church voted unanimously to establish a scholarship fund in her memory, which will be used to give assistance to students who either major in music, or who make a substantial contribution to the musical activities at their college while pursuing another major. The Betty Sue Shepherd Memorial Scholarship Fund will receive its ongoing funding through the proceeds from this annual concert.
