5/15/2008 - Selma minister wins Judson golf tournament By Michael J. Brooks Some fifty Alabama Baptist ministers from throughout the state gathered in Marion May 12-13 for Judson College's 46th annual Ministers Golf Tournament. The tournament was played on the golf course of Marion Military Institute. "The greens were marvelous, and the weather was beautiful," said golf committee chair David Byrd, pastor of the Northside Baptist Church in Jasper. "It was a great two days." Byrd said the annual tournament is a time for ministers to relax and enjoy one another's company, plus they get to learn more about what Judson offers for the young ladies in their churches. The ministers played on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, and enjoyed their customary banquet on Monday night. Overall winners of the tournament were honored at the concluding luncheon on Tuesday. Bob Frazer, minister of youth and education at Elkdale Baptist Church in Selma, who attended the tournament for the first time was the overall winner. Glenn Stewart, staff minister at LifePoint Baptist Church in Albertville placed second and Shannon Allen, pastor of the Pine Grove Baptist Church in Heiberger, placed third. "Two Judson ladies helped us immensely," Byrd said. "Lesia Hightower, administrative assistant in the office of development and Jennifer Truelove, director of the alumnae office, took care of so many of the details for us, and we're grateful." Byrd has served as chair of the ministers golf committee for a number of years. He's assisted by Harold Newberry of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove, Ed Cruce of the Bessemer Baptist Association, A. L. Courtney, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, Pell City and Shannon Allen of Heiberger. “It's good for these men to get away for a day or two and to play a sport they enjoy," said Judson president Dr. David Potts. "We're happy to host this tournament and we appreciate what these ministers do for our institution and for God's kingdom in Alabama." *Article courtesy of the Judson College Public Relations Office. |
