10/29/2008 - Earth Team focus of "Southern Living" magazine story By Michael Brooks Judson College biology professor Dr. Thomas Wilson and the college "Earth Team" are featured in the October edition of "Southern Living" magazine. The four page feature, with beautiful photographs of the Perry Lakes Park area, tells the story of Wilson's work on environmental projects, including protecting the park from logging. "The magazine contacted me mainly because of their interest in the birding tower," Wilson said. "The tower was a project of Auburn's Rural Studio and it's become a national outdoor destination. I think more birders and tourists will come because of this story." The birding tower, a decommissioned fire tower, was moved to the site from 80 miles away by the Auburn team. It rises more than 100 feet and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, forests, swamps and river. More than 200 species of birds are indigenous to the area. The Perry Lakes Park and Marion Fish Hatchery woods encompass some 900 acres. All work done at the site is performed by volunteers, including Wilson and his Earth Team students. Wilson said the "Southern Living" photographer spent time with the students last fall since the magazine works a year in advance. "Dallas and Bibb counties are exploding with nature-based Cahaba River projects," Wilson said. "Perry County is slow to respond to this great ecotourism opportunity and we have the best part of the river for family activities." *** To see Southern Living magazine's October 2008 edition article
