5/23/2009 - Judson hosts Diabetes Awareness Walk "Walk to Your Own Beat: The Fight Against Diabetes"
Jointly Hosted by Judson College's Science Club and Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society
Purpose: raise awareness of diabetes prevention and management techniques in Perry County When: Saturday, May 23, 2009 Where: registration at Perry County Courthouse; walk begins there; termination at the Marion Depot Tentative Times: 8 am: Registration begins 8:30 am: Welcome, entertainment, brief speeches from doctors, possibly personal success stories 9:00 am: Walk begins (police escort, possibly school band leading) 10:00 am: Walk termination - children's activities, health stations and screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure (diabetes literature, health professionals), healthy refreshments (also registration at depot for those who choose not to walk) 12:00 pm: Event ends (tentatively) Random Event Information: •- advertisement in newspapers, radio, fliers, poster contest in schools •- no entry fee •- elementary schools "diabetes awareness program" •- door prizes - I Pod, pedometers from The Walk, visors, T-shirts (random health organizations..some AllKids, AIM), (water bottles?), (jump ropes?) •- Pre-registration will ensure a bag with a water bottle, T-shirt, and pedometer for adults. Pre-registered children will be given the same package, but the pedometer will be replaced with a jump rope •- child care will be provided by Judson students
