6/17/2009 - Incoming freshman receives Christian Character Award

Incoming Judson College freshman April Brown of Gilbertown, Ala. was selected as the recipient of the 2009 Ruth Evans Christian Character Award during her high school graduation ceremony on May 15 at South Choctaw Academy.

Established in 1974 by friends, family and former students of Evans, who was a long-time educator in Choctaw County, the award is given annually to one graduating high school senior in the county who exemplifies Christian character and integrity.

Brown was presented her award for her outspoken and active service at church and in her community. As an active member of Morgan Chapel Baptist Church, she:

  • assists with the music program
  • serves as choir member
  • helps with nursery work
  • And teaches a pre-school Sunday School class.

Through a desire to draw more youth into worship attendance, Brown initiated a youth outreach and visitation program at her church. Her committment to the outreach was considered the driving force behind the church's current youth program, with youth members attending church camp for the first time in recent history.

Brown plans to attend Judson College in the fall, where she will pursue a degree that will allow her to serve in youth ministry.

CONGRATULATIONS, APRIL!
