6/27/2009 - Judson honors Armstrong Adams at graduation

By Michael J. Brooks

Judson alumna Mary Grace Armstrong Adams of Cedar Bluff was awarded the 2009 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Non-Student Award as part of Judson College's commencement on June 27.

Judson president Dr. David Potts presented the award and read the citation which noted that Adams determined to come to Judson College when she observed the godly life of her pastor's wife who was a "Judson girl."

Adams, who was married to the late Ferrell Adams, graduated from Judson in 1951 with her B.A. in English after taking music courses at Shorter College in Rome, Ga. as a high school student. She completed her teacher certification at Jacksonville State University.

Adams taught grammar school and high school in north Alabama in addition to working in retail business. She taught Sunday School and played piano at the Cedar Bluff First Baptist Church and played the organ at the Cedar Bluff First United Methodist Church where she currently is a member.

Adams has been a faithful alumna of her college, supporting it through the years with her influence, student recruitment and finances. She established in the current academic year the Armstrong Scholarship to assist students with financial need and who are "women of character and scholarship."

Potts noted that Adams said on the occasion of her fiftieth class reunion that she wished Judson to "move into the future with the same grace and love of education, blessed with the dedication to service of man and God."
