9/20/2009 - Church honors Alumna for service as music minister By Michael J. Brooks Pine Flat Baptist Church in Suttle honored Beth Watters on Sept. 20 for her 25 years of service as music minister. Pastor Michael Brooks noted that Watters had actually served the church for 26 years since she served one year as pianist before being named music minister. The former Beth McElroy of Birmingham, she earned her music degree at Judson College in 1980. While a student she met and later married store-owner Ruben Watters of Sprott, now an employee of Mercedes-Benz in Vance and a deacon at Pine Flat. Beth Watters is employed as a middle-school choral music teacher for the Selma City School system. The Watters' second daughter, Sarah Jean, is following her mother's path as a music major at Judson, studying voice with her mother's former music teacher, Dr. Betty Campbell. "One thing I appreciate is that Beth has worked with our youth and children, taking them on many trips over the years," said Pine Flat's acting deacon chairman Bill Bennett. "I remember her talking my daughter to a youth choir retreat at Gulf Shores a few years ago. There's a charm about Beth. She's a sweet person and easy-going. She's served faithfully and it's been a privilege to work with her here in our church." * Article courtesy of the Judson College Public Relations Department.
