Judson Spotlight On: Professor in the Pulpit
By Daphne Henderson Dr. Harold ‘Hal' Arnold came to Judson College five years ago from Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. Along with being the assistant professor of psychology, chair of the social science division and head of the psychology department, he is also the pastor of Pisgah Baptist Church in rural Perry County.
Long-time Pisgah member Brenda Edwards said, "We really enjoy having Hal in our church, and Paula, too. They fit in with us so well and we love them. Hal is a caring pastor and a good preacher." One might find Paula Arnold in the campus IT office on the ground floor of Jewett Hall or walking quickly through the hallways, usually wearing a headband and ballet flats, as she keeps everyone's computers humming. The Arnolds have a daughter, Jennifer, and two grandchildren, Tommy and John Michael. They also are parents to two spoiled Pekingese, Mante and Rusti. After hours, Hal Arnold enjoys playing the guitar and tennis, camping and traveling. Arnold holds mission work very close to his heart and has participated in several trips throughout his lifetime. "Mission work is such a life-changing experience," Arnold said. During his senior year of college, Arnold visited Bangladesh. Later, he visited Panama through the Journeyman program, a Southern Baptist short-term missionary opportunity, where he worked with youth and taught music. "When you travel someplace like that, it makes you realize how good you have it here," Arnold said. Arnold says that his least favorite part about his job is the paperwork. When asked what his favorite part about Judson was, he quickly replied, "Paula and I love being a part of the Judson family. It's not just a job. This is a special place where I get to not only teach psychology but I get to use my talents and skills and share them with my students. Judson truly is a wonderful place." Arnold was given the Thompson Faculty Award at Honors Convocation last spring. *Article courtesy of the Judson College Public Relations Department.
