2/27/2010 - Education professor to preside at annual KDE meeting, alumna to present

By Michael J. Brooks

Educators and students from throughout the Southeast who are members of Kappa Delta Epsilon education fraternity will gather in Birmingham on Feb. 26-27.

Judson College assistant professor of education, Dr. Lesley Sheek, serves as the KDE South regional director and is responsible for organizing the event in conjunction with the chapters of the region.

"Current teachers and teacher candidates from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas comprise the South region of KDE," Sheek explained. "We're excited about the professional development opportunities the meeting will provide. In addition this will be an opportunity for chapters to share ideas for service projects which is a focus of KDE chapters."

The regional meeting serves the purposes of KDE: to promote education by fostering fellowship, high scholastic standards and professional ideals. KDE is comprised of collegiate as well as alumni chapters. The organization celebrated its 75th anniversary with a national conference in Washington, D.C. last year.

College education majors are eligible for nomination to KDE if they've completed a minimum of 30 hours of coursework and maintained a 3.0 grade point average. Students must also demonstrate character, superior scholarship and commitment to serving others.

Many of the students remain as alumni and affiliate through regional chapters, Sheek explained.

The regional meeting will be held at Samford University and will include four presentations on various topics of interest to both pre-service and active teachers.

Laura Liddell Philpot, an '09 Judson graduate and a teacher at Chelsea Intermediate School, will give a presentation entitled, "Prospective and New Teacher Tips."

"Laura will talk about interviewing for jobs, setting up your classroom and other concerns of beginning teachers," Sheek said.

Additionally the event will include a Friday night trip to Vulcan's observation deck and a Saturday afternoon trip to the McWane Science Center.

Headquarters hotel is the Hampton Inn Lakeshore.

Registration deadline is Feb. 5.
