3/16/2010 - Students prepare for three-state choir tour during spring break

Nearly 40 Judson College musicians will depart March 16 for a spring choir tour encompassing three states.

Students will perform at four high schools and two churches in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina for a total of nine performances.

Presentations will be given by the entire choir and by "Faith," the official ambassador ensemble for Judson. The Judson hand-bells will perform as well.

Performance locations were chosen with care, and in some cases, with a direct connection to the choir's director, Dr. Judy L. Ransom. One of the high schools in Maryland is actually her alma mater, and the service on March 21 will be at her former church, Trinity Presbyterian in Winston Salem.

"We'll have an assortment of musical styles, from Renaissance madrigals and motets to choral anthems and selections from larger works in the literature," Ransom said.

"Contemporary and popular music will also have a place in these presentations--there is something for everyone."

According to Ransom, one primary focus will be to reach out to high school students, particularly those in music classes and to promote Judson College as one of the finest colleges for women of faith.

Several high school directors also spoke of a musical "exchange" between Judson singers and their own choirs, followed by an open dialogue between both sets of students. A member of Judson's admissions staff will also be on hand to distribute literature and answer questions.

The tour will conclude on March 22. The choir will perform at their traditional homecoming concert for the Marion community on March 28 at Siloam Baptist Church at 5:30 p.m.
