Hoggle Marks Fourteen Years as Judson's Equine Coach

Jennifer Hoggle has been teaching equine studies at Judson College for the past 14 years. She is an alumna of Judson and graduated in 1994.

Hoggle, the daughter of Jerry and Linda Johnston, attended Vestavia High School in Birmingham. She got interested in Judson after seeing a horse picture on the Judson table at a college day!

She married Marion businessman Robert Hoggle in 1996, and they have lived in Marion ever since along with their four dogs and six horses.

Hoggle loves Marion because it is a small town and a friendly community.

Her favorite aspect about being the equestrian coach at Judson is helping a rider with no previous show experience to qualify for national competition.

Among Hoggle's favorite success stories is that of Lisa Windom who came to Judson with no riding experience. Windom took a class, learned to ride, tried out for the equine team and competed in walk/trot with good success. After her graduation in 2000, she won the title of "Miss Rodeo Nevada."

"Lisa flew back to Alabama and spent a grueling week with me learning everything from bits to parts of the horse to rodeo terminology," Hoggle recounted.

"She represented herself well throughout the entire pageant and nobody was the wiser that she just learned to ride a horse and that the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo was her first queen presentation run."

Hoggle spends her day in the riding arena or barn, always with horses and equine students.

"It's a dirty job and some would hate the idea of cleaning a stall or treating a hurt horse, but I guess I live for those types of things," she said.

Hoggle is excited about Judson's equine program and the new equine studies major. The new major offers a lot of career possibilities for graduates.

"If you can dream it, we can probably figure out how to accomplish it," Hoggle said.

She's also excited about the new barn slated for completion this summer. The barn is a "green project" using natural lighting to help the equine program "go green."
