Guidance Counselors say Judson College one of Best

A small college regionally known for its engaging academic experiences and the achievements of graduates, Judson College in Marion, Ala. skyrocketed into national attention on Thursday.

The recognition of a throughly engaging academic program caused the College to be ranked among the top 20 of the 266 National Liberal Arts Colleges by guidance counselors at America's "Best High Schools". According to the U.S. News website, this is the first time ever their ranking process has included the opinions of guidance counselors who "often have a considerable amount of firsthand knowledge about colleges and universities in their regions..."

Judson College - a Christian liberal arts, sciences and pre-professional degree offering institution for women with just under 400 students - has often received recognition as a national leader in community service and service-learning. Located in an economically challenged area of the state, Judson has a reputation for attracting students with a desire to not only strengthen their minds academically but to also deepen their spiritual understanding of faith through service to others.

Out of the 265 other National Liberal Arts Colleges in the nation, guidance counselors gave Judson College a score of 4.2 out of 5, making the institution the only National Liberal Arts College in the state of Alabama and one of only six other women's colleges to make the Top 20 list.

Synovate, an opinion-research firm based in Chicago, collected the data for the rankings. High School counselors asked to participate in the rankings were all from 1,787 public high schools nationwide in 48 states and the District of Columbia that made the 2010 U.S. News & World Report's Best High Schools rankings. Counselor's scores were based on their own insights used to direct their students to particular colleges in addition to their knowledge about the schools in general, as well as, what they knew about each college's academic record, curriculum, faculty, programs, and graduates. The counselors then rated the quality of a school's undergraduate academic programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished).

Scores for each school were totaled and divided by the number of counselors who rated that school, and then were ranked in descending order based on the average high school counselor reputation score.
