9/22/2010 - Louisville Artist to be featured this Wednesday

The exhibition, "We Are Dying to Have You for Dinner," features the ceramics of Louisville-based artist Steven Cheek. On view at the Marian Acree Tucker Gallery at Judson College, the show opens Sept. 22 and continues through Oct. 22.

An artist's reception will be held Sept. 22 from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. in the gallery, and the artist will give a brief lecture on his work in Tucker Recital Hall from 9:20 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 23. Cheek will also give a demonstration of his work in Mead Hall the same day at 1 pm.

Cheek received his MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2006 and a BFA from the University of Evansville in 2002. He is currently adjunct lecturer at the University of Louisville and the Artist in Residence at Mary Anderson Arts at Mt. St. Francis. Prior to moving to Louisville he was visiting professor at Georgia State University School of Art and Design, a sabbatical replacement and adjunct lecturer at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and an Artist in Residence at Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts in Asheville, NC.

Creating stunning functional ceramics primarily from porcelain glazed with subtle celadon glazes, Cheek carves appropriated images from our culture to direct a dialogue about issues important to him.

Some of his exhibitions include "The New Aesthetics of Ceramics Invitational, curated by Charlie Cummings, in Huntington, Ind.", "International Cup, juried by Richard Notkin, in Missoula, Mont.", the "16th San Angelo National Ceramics Competition, juried by Ann Lancaster, in San Angelo, Texas" and "Cup: The Intimate Object V, juried by Pete Pinnell, in Fort Wayne, Ind."

Cheek has received several awards and recognitions and is included in many private and public collections.

Works in the exhibition are for sale.
