10/5/2010 - Angel Tree founder & former inmate to speak, sixth time Mary Kay Beard will return for the sixth time to Judson College as chapel guest on Oct. 5. Beard was once on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list, but in prison she became a Christian, earned two college degrees and committed her life to work with inmates. For several years Beard worked with adult offenders, first as Prison Fellowship's Alabama area director and then with her late husband, Don, at Shepherd's Fold, a residential facility for men transitioning from prison. Always an advocate for children, Beard founded Angel Tree, a program that provides Christmas gifts to the children of inmates. Angel Tree touches children in all 50 states and in more than 100 countries around the world. The program has not only grown in width, reaching nearly seven million children in its 25 years of existence, but also in depth as it ministers to children year round in a variety of programs. Beard maintains an office and proves counseling through Encourager Ministers, which the Beards founded in 1995, and continues to accept invitations to speak across the nation. Her life story is told in "Rogue Angel," published in 2005. The chapel service begins at 11 a.m. in the Ramsay-McCrummen Chapel. The public is welcomed. * Article courtesy of the Judson College Public Relations Department.
