11/17/2010 - College President honored at Alabama Baptist Convention

By Michael J. Brooks

Messengers to the Alabama Baptist Convention meeting on Nov. 17 unanimously approved a resolution in appreciation of Dr. David Potts' 20th anniversary as president of Judson College.

The resolution was one of 10 adopted by messengers on issues ranging from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, smoke-free initiatives and appreciation to the convention's host church, Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover.

The resolution stated that Potts began service as Executive Vice President for Administration at Judson in 1987, was named President on July 1, 1990 and noted numerous improvements to the program and facilities at the college under his tenure.

Outgoing convention president, Dr. Jimmy Jackson of Huntsville, broke with precedent after resolutions committee chair Dr. Henry Cox presented the resolution. Jackson asked those in favor to stand, and then called for Potts to come to the platform. Jackson was lavish in his praise of Potts calling him "unassuming" but "a very effective and godly man." Jackson then led the messengers in an ovation of applause.

Judson College is one of three institutions of higher learning affiliated with Alabama Baptists.

Potts, a Birmingham native, is a graduate of Samford University and the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Beth, are parents of two daughters and have three grandchildren.
