1/11/2011 - Alumnae Young featured in "An Evening With History" event
ATLANTA, GA, JANUARY 7, 2011 - The Martin Luther King, Jr. March Committee, and
Executive Director Jamida Orange, will present "An Evening With History" that
features award winning Actress Billie Jean Young who recreates the life of the
late civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer in her one-woman show, "Fannie Lou
Hamer: This Little Light...". The performance will take place on Friday, January
14, 2011 at the St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, 1558 Venetian Drive, S.W.,
Atlanta, GA 30311. Addmission is free, and a free will offering will be
collected to benefit the M.L.K. March Committee activities in honor of the 25th
National Oberservance of the Martin Luther King , Jr. Holiday.
Atlanta's 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will kick off on
Sunday, January 9 with a Fellowship Service at Zion Grove Baptist Church, and
include a January 12 Health Rights Symposium at Freedom Hall, at the MLK Center,
the January 14 "Evening With History" performance of "Fannie Lou Hamer: This
Little Light..." featuring MacArthur Fellow and Alabama History Maker Billie Jean
Young at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Southwest Atlanta, and
culminates on Monday, January 17 with the Annual MLK March and Rally scheduled
to kick off at 1:30pm at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Baker Street.
"A renowned and gifted artist/activist/educator Billie Jean Young is known for
her stunningly accurate portrayals of the Mississippi Delta's fearless Fannie
Lou Hamer", says Jamida Orange, Executive Director of the MLK March Committee.
"Young's mesmerizing solo performances have helped to bring 'the spirit of
Fannie Lou Hamer' alive to countless people all over the world - indeed a new
generation will be equipped for the "next movement" because of this passionate
story", stated Orange.
