2/8/2011 - Judge Brown to speak in chapel

Judge Jean Williams Brown will speak in Judson chapel on Feb. 8.

Brown was born and reared in Birmingham.  She graduated with honors from Samford University and received her law degree from the University of Alabama, where she was a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society.  She is admitted to practice in all Alabama federal courts and is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar.

Judge Brown began her legal career as an Assistant Attorney General in Montgomery, specializing in criminal law.  Among the landmark cases she won were those upholding the constitutionality of Alabama's voter fraud law and habitual offender law, as well as a case making it easier to prosecute child abuse.  She also worked in the Opinions Division and served as the chief extradition officer for the Attorney General's office.

In her first statewide race, she was elected to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.  She was then elected to the Alabama Supreme Court, becoming the first woman to be elected to two appellate courts and the first Republican woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

Judge Brown currently serves as the Chief Legal Advisor to Secretary of State Beth Chapman. She and her husband, Terry, are parents of two daughters.

For over twenty-five years, she's taught kindergarten Sunday School at Montgomery's First Baptist Church.  She is a member of the sanctuary choir and serves as chairman of the Children's Learning Center and on the Community Ministries Board.

The event begins at 11 a.m. The public is welcomed.
