2/9/2011 - Designer Strawberryluna! to be featured in Tucker

The exhibition, Strawberryluna!, features the posters and prints of Pittsburgh, Pa. -based designer StrawberryLuna, aka Allison Glancey. On view at the Marian Tucker Acree Gallery, the show opens Feb. 9 and continues through March 6. There will be an artist's reception on Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 4 - 6 pm in the gallery, and the artist will give a brief lecture on her work in Tucker Recital Hall from 11 am until noon on Thursday, Feb. 10.  Glancey will also be making a print with the art department in Mead Hall on Thursday at 1 pm.  All events are free and open to the public.

Originally from Philadelphia, Glancey spent her childhood collecting circus flyers and propaganda art.  She eventually relocated to Pittsburgh, where she studied at the University of Pittsburgh.  In her work, rich textures overlap intricate patterns and vibrant paint, little fluffy animals don eye patches and sniff grenades, and well placed fonts float in the backgrounds. Glancey creates hundreds of thematic prints, whose imagery is driven by her dreams and the sound associations from the music she enjoys.

Glancey became a freelance designer with no formal training, and no studio space of her own.

"I began screenprinting in November of 2004," stated Glancey in a 2007 Indie Pretty Perfect interview. "I had always wanted to learn how and found out that a community print studio was in my city. They offer an "Open Studio" night where anyone can come in and screenprint once a week for a low fee and get a real hands on sink-or-swim go at print making."

"I fell in love almost immediately with screen-printing and started going weekly to work on simple art prints just for fun, just for myself with no expectations of anyone ever seeing them, let alone buying them. One of my prints caught the eye of a guy who connects poster artists with gigs in Philadelphia and he asked me if I wanted to try making rock posters a go. While being secretly terrified, I agreed to try. That was in April of 2005 when I did a poster for the band Garbage, and I've been making posters ever since."

Glancey has designed gig posters for an eclectic mix of performers, including Joe Cocker, the Melvins, Ben Harper, the Decembrists, and many, many others. Her work can regularly be found at Flatstock, the poster show series presented by the American Poster Institute which features an ongoing series of exhibitions showcasing the work of many of the most popular concert poster artists working today.

The works in the exhibition are for sale. For more information about the work, or the artist, contact Jamie Adams at 334.683.5251.
