Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the opera is about a brother and sister from a poor family who get lost in the forest while searching for food. During the night, they are visited by the Sandman and are watched over by fourteen angels. Awakened by the Dew Fairy, they discover a gingerbread cottage made of candy and cake, but the witch, who lives in the cottage, captures the children to bake and eat. She casts a spell on Hansel and Gretel, hoping to make a meal of the two, but they outwit her and cast her into the oven. After the family is reunited they rejoice and give thanks to the Heavenly Father.
