Frances Dew Hamilton Receives 2011 Outstanding Alumna Award
By Jennifer Truelove and Michael Brooks

Frances Dew Hamilton spent her life at Samford University, and Samford's sister Baptist school, Judson College, honored her as its outstanding alumna at the college's recent J-Day weekend.

Hamilton taught as an assistant professor of history at Samford for 37 years and worked for 13 years as executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission-the first woman to direct an entity of the state Baptist convention.

One of the award nominators, current ABHC director Dr. Lonette Berg, said that Hamilton "embodies the qualities of a Judson graduate-excellent character, determined leadership, willingness to serve, strong Christian values and unfailing loyalty. She is a tireless proponent of Judson College, encouraging all young women she encounters to consider Judson as their college choice."

Hamilton graduated from Judson in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in history and French. She earned a master's degree in history from the University of Georgia in 1959 where she worked as a graduate teaching assistant. Judson awarded her the doctor of humane letters degree in 1992.

As a historian, Hamilton served Alabama Baptists churches, associations, state convention entities and auxiliaries, the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions and Alabama colleges by encouraging and assisting in the collecting and preserving of history and heritage.

She co-authored "Daughters of the Dream," the history of Judson College published in 1989, and is currently updating the history for Judson's 175th anniversary in 2013.

Hamilton was elected to the Judson Board of Trustees by the Alabama Baptist Convention in 2007.

She is a member of a number of professional societies including Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Delta Phi, the Alabama Association of Historians, Alabama Historical Association, Baptist History and Heritage Society, Southern Historical Association and the Southern Baptist Historical Society. She has served as a vocalist and pianist at the First Baptist Church of Trussville.

Hamilton and her late husband, Taylor, are parents of Col. Charles Hamilton, currently serving with the U.S. Air Force in Iraq.
