Students Receive Scholarships From Whitehead Foundation of Atlanta Some 47 Judson College students received scholarships this academic year as part of an $88,000 grant from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation of Atlanta. Director of Financial Aid, Doris Wilson, noted that Judson has received a grant from the foundation every year since 1976 and that in the current year scholarships ranged from $500 to $3000. "We're delighted to have the foundation's support," Wilson said. "They make possible the education of many deserving young women at Judson." Lettie Pate Whitehead was born in Bedford County, Va. in 1872. Her husband, attorney Joseph Brown Whitehead, approached the Coca-Cola Company in 1899 with the idea of bottling the popular fountain beverage. Whitehead and an associate secured a contract and founded the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Atlanta. Mrs. Whitehead assumed responsibility for the company's business affairs after the death of her husband in 1906. She gave liberally from her business profits to many American colleges and to British and French war victims during World War II. The foundation was chartered in 1946 by the Whitehead's son as a memorial to his mother and with the specific purpose of providing aid to needy Christian women in nine Southern states. Most of the foundation's resources are used for undergraduate higher education scholarships in more than 200 institutions. A significant number of its scholarship grants target the medical, nursing and allied health fields. "We are ever grateful for this generosity in favor of Alabama's only woman's college," said Judson president Dr. David Potts. |
