2/29/2012 - New Army Scholarships Available at Judson College

By Michael J. Brooks

Lt. Col. Nicolas Britto of the U.S. Army believes that the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at Judson College and Marion Military Institute offers many advantages to students.  "Students have academic opportunities through ROTC, and can grow in strength and character as well," Britto said.

Judson College has offered an ROTC program for many years in partnership with MMI. Judson ROTC students take courses on their home campus and participate in drills at the neighboring campus.

Britto is now the official representative for the two Marion schools and is dividing his time between campuses.

"The Army has scholarships that will be awarded on a competitive basis to qualified Judson students interested in a military career," he said. "Each scholarship is valued at more than $60,000."  The scholarship includes a $600 per semester stipend for books.

Britto explained that applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and score 19 or higher on the ACT exam or 920 or higher on the SAT.

In addition to the tuition scholarships, ROTC offers a monthly living expense stipend for each school year for those admitted to the program. Britto said Judson students are also eligible for the Yellow Ribbon GI Educational Enhancement Program. Yellow Ribbon offers Veterans Administration funds to assist with education.

Upon graduation a student will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for women interested in a career of service as a military officer and also desiring a single-sex environment for their undergraduate experience," said Charlotte Clements, Vice President for Admissions and Financial Aid at Judson.

"Studies have shown that students at female-only institutions embrace higher levels of self-esteem and more leadership skills development than their counterparts at coed institutions.  Both sound like excellent qualities for future U.S. military officers."
