Alabama's Deputy State Superintendent of Education, Sherrill W. Parris, delivered the keynote address to some 100 educators from five counties who attended the "Effective Use of Technology to Improve Teaching and Learning" conference at Judson College on June 1.

Parris was lavish in her praise of Judson's distance learning program, from which she earned her educational certification. "I'm grateful to Judson," she said. "The college was ahead of its time in the early 80s!  Who would have thought that this small women's college in Marion, Alabama would lead the way in online education?"

Parris received her bachelor's degree from Auburn University. After her study at Judson and at the University of Alabama, she earned three additional degrees from the University of West Alabama.

Parris was principal of Cedar Park Elementary and Byrd Elementary School in Selma before becoming a reading specialist with the State Department of Education in 1999. She was named Alabama Assistant State Superintendent of Education in 2008.

Parris said she began her career in social work with the United Methodist Children's Homes, and then decided to make a change.  "I couldn't just stop work and go back to school full time, so the on-line program was ideal for me," she said. "It opened the door to my future."

The technology conference was organized by Judson College Education Department head Dr. Gwen McCorquodale and was underwritten by a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation. Among the 13 conference sessions were those related to the use of apps in the classroom, digital resources, publishing tools and Glogster.

Parris urged attendees to learn and use all the technology available for teachers.  "Technology is one of the most powerful tools we have," she said. "When love and skill work together, one can expect a masterpiece. You are always only one choice away from changing your life--and your students!"
