11/11/2012 - 'Ann Judson, Missionary' Presented at Judson College

A new play, Ann Judson, Missionary, was presented at Judson College on Nov. 8 and 10. The play was written, arranged, and directed by Dr. Billie Jean Young, associate professor and artist-in-residence at the college.

The play is a dramatic re-telling of the life of Ann Hasseltine Judson, America's first international missionary--a story told in drama, dance and song.

Judson drama student Sau Nam of Burma had a starring role in the play. "As we approach the two hundredth anniversary of Ann Judson's arrival on Burmese shores, I am grateful to Almighty God that we are able to help bring her message of love and salvation back to the American people in this form," she said. "As Baptists in Burma, we celebrate the Judson's legacy each year on the anniversary date of their arrival in Burma. Ann Judson, Missionary is much more than a play."

Ann and Adoniram Judson traveled to India in 1812 as newlyweds, having sensed the call of God to take the gospel to a foreign land. After a disappointing year's sojourn in India, the couple went to Burma (now known as "Myanmar") where Ann was to spend the next thirteen years until her death.

The drama, which highlights some of the successes of the mission as well as its trials, was conceived and performed by students at the college named for Ann Judson.

The cast also included UAB senior and gospel recording artist, Jasmine Williams of Tuscaloosa; Chaplain Nancy Corcoran of Wellesley College and the Zion United Methodist Church choir of Marion.
