12/18/2012 - Marion Resident Founds Gloria Huey Crawford Scholarship at Judson College
by Michael J. Brooks Long-time Marion resident George Crawford has established a scholarship at Judson College in honor of his mother, Gloria Huey Crawford. The scholarship will benefit students in the department of music. "Mother was a wonderful coloratura soprano at Huntingdon College and I heard her beautiful voice while growing up," Crawford said. "She also sang the dedicatory concert when the new organ was installed at Marion Methodist Church years ago." Mrs. Crawford grew up in Enterprise, Ala., the daughter of George Bolling and Vonceil Huey. She enrolled at Huntingdon and later met Lawrence Crawford, a veterinary student at Auburn University. The two married and moved to Mobile where Dr. Crawford founded his veterinary practice. Mrs. Crawford played an integral role in the establishment and management of the Crawford clinic. In 1946, the Crawfords moved to Marion, where, once again, Mrs. Crawford assisted her husband in the operation of his new practice in Perry County as well as helped superintend the family farm. Dr. Crawford died in 2004. Mrs. Crawford still makes Marion her home. She is a member of the DAR and the Marion United Methodist Church. "I wanted to honor my mother and Judson College," George Crawford said. "This scholarship will assist music students in their studies." "Judson College is most grateful to Mr. George Crawford for his long-standing support," said college president Dr. David Potts. "We count it a privilege to honor the life of his mother in the establishment of a generous scholarship for students in the music department of the college. We believe the music department to be a most fitting place for her recognition because of her accomplishments as an artist and the family’s love of music. Voice and piano students will be the beneficiaries of this benevolence for generations to come."
