Scholarship established in memory of Lawrence and Gloria Crawford

Judson College has awarded the first Lawrence and Gloria Crawford Scholarships for International Students to two students from Myanmar: Kai Bu and Yaw Nam.

Kai Bu, George Crawford, and Yaw Nam

Kai Bu is a senior English major from Myitkyina, Kachin. She will return to Myanmar after her graduation to teach English.  Yaw Nam is a senior music major who also plans to return to her home in Myitkyina, Kachin to teach music.

Both students came to Judson as a result of a strategic partnership between Judson College and Kachin Theological College and Seminary (KTCS) in Myanmar. For several years, KTCS students have earned degrees at Judson and returned to Myanmar to teach at KTCS or to start other schools in Myanmar.

The scholarship was established by Marion resident George Crawford in memory of his parents, Lawrence and Gloria Crawford. The scholarship provides tuition assistance, as well as a stipend for personal use, for international students.

“The College is exceedingly grateful for Mr. Crawford’s establishment of [the scholarship],” said Judson President David Potts. “From the beginning of [the KTCS] partnership, Mr. Crawford has been an advocate for the students from Myanmar. Support for these young women from other parts of the world enriches the institution’s culture and extends the influence of the College across the globe,” Potts said.

Lawrence Crawford and Gloria Huey met in the 1940s as college students–she a student at Huntingdon College and he a veterinary student at Auburn University. The two later married and moved to Mobile, where Dr. Crawford founded his veterinary practice. Mrs. Crawford played an integral role in the establishment and management of the Crawford clinic. The Crawfords moved to Marion in 1946, where Mrs. Crawford assisted her husband in the operation of his new practice in Perry County and helped to superintend the family farm. Dr. Crawford died in 2004, and Mrs. Crawford died in 2016.
