JC faculty perform at Music by Women Festival
Dr. Jessica Spafford, Assistant Professor of Music (Voice) and Dr. Cindy St. Clair, Assistant Professor of Music (Piano) performed at the third annual Music by Women Festival, held at Mississippi University for Women March 7-9. The festival included papers, presentations, lecture recitals, and performances related to music composed, taught, and performed by women. The festival also featured concerts of new and historic music.
Spafford and St. Clair performed in two concerts on March 8 in MUW’s Kossen Auditorium, along with Brianne Little, flutist from Fairmont State University. In Concert #5, the trio performed The Mariko Suite by Catherine McMichael (b. 1954). Later that evening, the trio closed Concert #6 with “Portrait (Valse Chantée)” by Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), “Villanelle” by Eva Dell’Acqua (1856-1930), and “Tasting Notes” by Kathryn Cernauskas. This is Spafford’s second year to attend the festival, which she calls a “comprehensive experience”, noting the “academic opportunities, cultural aspects highlighting the under-representation of women, and hearing and performing music of all styles from a wide variety of cultures. Musicians come from all over the country, in all manner of ensembles, to share in this event, network with each other, and continue to broaden our scope and awareness of music composed by women.” The Music by Women Festival bookends the Judson duo’s spring concert schedule, which included performances at both Judson College and Auburn University in February.
