Judson art student’s senior exhibition to open at Marian Acree Tucker Gallery

The exhibition of work by student artist Rebecca Case  will be featured in Marian Acree Tucker Gallery at Judson College in Marion, Ala. The show, which will be on display from April 14 through April 18,  is called Etherealize and features video games and artwork.

There will be an artist’s reception on Wednesday, April 16, from 3:30 to 5 P.M. in the gallery, and the artist will give a brief lecture on her work in the Adams-Armstrong Lecture Hall at 11 a.m.

“My work concentrates on the comical side of tragedy. Not everything can be explained by comedy, and it often has to be portrayed in the dark light of tragedy,” Case said.

“I have always seen the world through a different side of the looking glass. When I was a child, I didn’t want to be a Disney princess. I wanted to be the heroine – the Digidestined, the Pokemon Trainer, a Power Ranger and a Wizard.” Case said.

She describes her method as random, created from a mixture of music, literature, video games, and, overall, the power of theory. Literary works by Edgar Allan Poe, Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare and Flannery O’Connor inspire her video games. The Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Dragon Age, and Elder Scrolls series create the groundwork of the games.

“I didn’t want to conform and accept the ideals of what defines a male or female, so why should my characters?” she said.

Case will receive her Bachelor of Art from Judson College in 2014. Her majors are Art and English, with minors in Business and Web Design.

Case’s work has been shown at the Student Art Exhibition at Judson College in 2012, 2013 and 2014. She has received several awards, including the Sallie McAllister Curb Arnold Award.
